Oh, so there is no need for gritters? They just need to pour warm water on the roads? Pouring warm water gets rid of ice by melting it, though that water is then liable to stay and refreeze. Adding salt/grit lowers the freezing point of water, a preventative. One's a solution to get rid, one's a preventative, completely different things...

I would, but my tank is a pita to remove lol impossible to do with just one person and fiddly with two, so if this is an easier method I'd rather try it

Ok so I'm pretty certain there is a reasonable amount of water in my tank, wasn't able to fill up before all this snow came down and the bike has been sat a long time in this cold and tbh I'm not 100% sure about the seal on the tank. I've googled for ways to solve it and came across this unusual method of putting meth spirits in the tank, the alcohol should then react with the water and get rid of it. I know them chemistry seems pretty sound, but before I try this, have anyone else ever tried this? Any idea how much to put in? link Edit to add, the bike wont start and is misfiring, battery is fine.

I found that with my helmet.. two vents on the front that dont close. It also has two at the back to create a nice refreshing breeze... I only found out a few weeks ago when it started getting cold haha. Yeah I think if it wasn't for these the helmet would be a lot quieter aswell, I think it's completely stupid having vents you can't close, I've put a load of sellotype over them for the winter to try and keep it a bit warmer.

The HJC IS-16 they have is great but very noisy unless you wear ear plus. Also there are two vents on the front which you can't close so can be cold in winter. So if you wear earplugs anyway and don't ride in cold weather it's a great helmet

Personally I'd rather buy a pair of dog tags, but good shout none the less, especially for bikers. There are however plenty of companies in England that do these as well, they are generally aimed at people with medical conditions or rare blood groups. A quick google of 'medical wristbands' will bring up lots of results including a charity that specialise in them. Can get some nice bits of jewlery with all the infromation on it.

Pinlock anti fog inserts are amazing, very useful things. I got mine from race visors, they didn't have one specific to my helmet so I emailed them, they asked for a picture of my visor then they told me which one I needed, very helpful service at a great price. I need to get one for my new helmet actually. A must have for winter, second to heated grips

I think Chris was drunk last night Vince. That's quite a strange problem, I've had similar with my bike on a rare occasion but with some patience and getting the right amount of throttle (with choke = none, without = 1/4 throttle) I've always got it going again. Not sure what causes it though sorry mate, think it might just a problem with older bikes.

Let me confirm, the bike normally starts first time but if it doesn't you can't start it at all? If you left the bike for say half an hour would it then start? If yes then you are flooding the engine, two options, open full throttle and press start button for about three seconds, repeat once or twice then try starting normally, this should get loads of air through the engine and evaporate some fuel, if that fails then leave for at least 20 mins for excess fuel to evaporate If no I would suggest it could be the battery, it maybe faulty and only holding enough charge to start the bike once, if you can jump it straight away after your initial attempt I'd say this is your most likely cause. Though before replacing the battery check there isn't something draining it, lights, heated grips etc.

Yeah Nik wax does wear off after a while, just like most forms of waterproofing, so it would make sense that the area that gets rubbed the most will wear off first. I'd just reapply the waterproofing, should be fine.

As long as it's a proper hoody and not one with a zip it will take the chill off a reasonable amount as it stops the air that comes in through the leather's zip and breathing holes.

unless it's a rare decent day through autum/winter it's now going to be essential rides only I think but the bike wont be 'put away' at all.

It's well worth a visit when it's quiter Simon, been myself and it's good to be able to easily walk around the gardens and look at all the mamorials (without all the contant rumble of harleys)
