  1. I saw this and thought... or maybe not.

  2. We got a little concerned about the first room we did, but now we’re quite blasé about it. It’s just time constraints that cause us problems. At least it’s only one wall this time, and not three which we had with the first room we did. That also had major issues with damp due to many years of neglect and a broke, leaking gutter (now replaced).
  3. Or we could do it properly and lime plaster. We dry lined the bathroom but that is a relatively modern addition that doesn’t need to breath in the same way that 400+ yr old stone walls need to.
  4. So it begins. This will be occupying us for the next couple of weeks, maybe longer depending on the availability of people to do lime plastering.
  5. There needs to be a tongue firmly in cheek emoji.
  6. Sound similar to our situation, though we don’t have the limestone. We are about half way up a hill. The guy who fitted our sewage treatment plant last year also installed drainage some years ago.
  7. Install drainage?
  8. We’re hoping the plaster doesn’t need to come off. Lime plaster costs about double that of normal plaster and, though it would be great to be sympathetic to the building, this bit of the wall isn’t so badly exposed to the weather so we’re prepared to compromise.
  9. Good point. I’ll add that in to my Product Backlog.
  10. This weekend. Hmmm. Stripping out a room. remove existing furniture cuppa remove fitted wardrobe cuppa remove shelving, lift floor cuppa remove door fittings and radiator cuppa Remove skirting board. Lift floor covering abandon room to my good lady to strip wallpaper off the walls and rub down paintwork possibly bash plaster off wall (it practically fell off in one room)
  11. I did, indeed, notice the lunch and pint at the end, but I think a cuppa to go with the planning and design phase, and one with the test / post implementation review phase would still be appropriate.
  12. That sounds more like a four cups of tea day than a two cup.
  13. Much of our drive is in need of a a bit of TLC. I’ll just have to patch it in the short term. The area in front of the house is, we think, old river cobbles, overlaid with 20mm gravel with binding. Good for security, and not too bad for riding on. A bit of hassle for pushing the bike around, though.
  14. The background to this is we decided we wanted to downsize house, and get a bigger garden as we quite enjoy gardening (I did a bit of paid gardening for pin money after I retired). We quite fancied a bit of a project to keep us busy in retirement. Two problems with that. 1) Downsizing house to get a bigger garden is unlikely. We couldn’t afford a house of the size that gave us the bigger garden. Actually, not strictly true but we had a cash flow problem at the time. 2) My good lady saw this house, saw it’s potential and persuaded me it was a good idea (she’s done this before y’know). So we’ve got this project keeping us occupied in retirement / lockdown. It’s working for us thus far.
  15. The guys we use are local, and not Irish We suspect some of our drive was laid (topped up) about the same time as the Carlisle by-pass, in the same way as I was offered to have my drive in Brum done when they were working on the M6 toll.
  16. Errr. Are you qualified and insured?
  17. Oh yes. It’s a 400+ yr old stone built farmhouse that has been treated badly (modern materials and old houses do not good bedfellows make) and neglected. We’re a year into a five year renovation project.
  18. We have about of an acre of woodland. We’re having another couple of trees taken down next week to dry for next year.
  19. Good evening. Tonight we are mostly sitting in the middle room, nominally labelled as the dining room. We have the wood burner lit and, being an ancient device on which the controls are not effective, it is consuming wood at a horrific rate. Methinks we’ll have to replace it when we renovate this part of the house. ££££’s

  21. The Great Gig in the Sky. One of my favourite tracks. Unfortunately my good lady isn’t so keen, so it’s one of those “I’m in the car alone, volume up to 11” things. During quiet times in lockdown I’ve trawled YouTube for less run of the mill stuff. In doing so I encountered the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain. Among their offering was this...
  22. And we have to wait for a dry day to have the dormer flat roof replaced. We can’t make progress on that room until that’s done. Also annoying because, with no ceiling, there’s no insulation, and it’s bloody freezing up there.
  23. Not casting aspersions on your good self. Apologies for any offence caused. I was merely attempting to highlight the contrast between the respect that your post shows, and the type of misplaced and disrespectful attitudes of a certain element.
  24. Shame there are those who are prepared to be complete arses about him taking a completely legal holiday. I despair sometimes.
  25. Fast forward to 4:40
