  1. I haven't ever paid upfront for any sort of building work and never would. I have mostly dealt with local people with known local addresses and phone numbers. All the tradespeople I used had trade accounts with suppliers so didn't have to pay for the materials in advance anyway. Steer clear, I say.

"Get the bike ready, keep your right foot on the rear brake, keep your left foot down to support the bike. Select 1st gear, apply a little throttle and find the clutch bite point"

As GOG says, sounds like this was written by someone who doesn't ride.

That is one of the reasons I often use the front brake doing a hill start. Otherwise you have to do a dance if you were in neutral with the footbrake depressed - switch to front brake, put right foot down, select first gear, put left foot back down, select rear brake, release front brake, set off.

If you stop in first gear it is simpler, but with a heavy clutch and a long wait there is a limit to how long you want to hold the clutch in.

I now have hill start assist!

  3. @Steve_M I don't think the bike you want exists.  Centre of gravity matters as much as weight, I have found. I have just traded my R1250RT for the R1250RS. Not the upright riding position you are after, but a lot easier to handle at low speed and more nimble. The R1200R might be worth thinking about. I know it doesn't meet you weight target but CofG is low.

  4. They are also Starkey. They are a different material to the old ones but still soft, and have a green plug for the attenuation which can be changed. You can choose the plug depending on use.

Cost around £140 instead of £100 for the standard, harder ones.

  5. All custom earplugs are not the same. Around 2001 I got some Starkey ones which were fine. When I went for some new ones around 5 years ago the audiologist said standard ones were harder nowadays so he got some more expensive ones made for me which were softer than the new "normal". They are also fine.

  6. I have had 5 BMWs over the last 20 years or so with no problems. F650, K1200RS, R1200R, R1250RT and now R1250RS. I think the discussion forums make problems seem worse than they are. I had a Kawasaki where the engine self destructed at around 3500 miles.

  7. I remember being in Italy in the late 80s and in a restaurant people were coming in with the men dressed in smart suits, each carrying a car radio which they put on the table next to them while they ate dinner. Seemed bizarre at the time.
