  1. Not as long as you don't get carried away. Just start small, and see what it sounds like!
  2. Broom handle and a lump hammer!
  3. Intermittent problems, I have had exactly the same with my XJ. It will be fuel related, check for crap in the carbs, blocked jets, does it have a paper fuel filter? they are rubbish, mine was letting clods of old paper through into the fuel pump and carbs. Float height in the carbs, and balance too.
  4. Give the guy a brake Colin!
  5. I like the sound of that TC, I can't claim to stick to the speed limit, but I don't really want to HAVE to speed just to keep up!
  6. Well, they did the job for years, and the chain I bought last month for the divvy came with one, which I used as I didn't have a chain tool, and will be splitting the chain for a rebuild in the winter. (may replace anyway, but thought I might as well leave the option?
  7. Out of interest, whats the concensus on speed for a rideout thats got quite a few going (as opposed to you and two mates ragging it!). I tend to cruise myself between 50 and 80 depending on road and traffic, but quite happy enjoying bimbling along at 50 in the sun. What sort of pace will you guys be going at, not worried as I know you won't be thrashing it and we'll all keep up, but just curious!
  8. Never done a rideout before, me and the missus definitely up for what ever ride the more knowledgeable people choose. Can't wait!
  9. HA HA! You jest sir. I have a 3' long breaker bar and weigh 19stone and I struggled! In the end had to put a 3" piece of wood through the wheel onto the swing arm and heat the nut too. I don't think it had been off for a while.
  10. Getting the front sprocket undone is a laugh too!
  11. HA HA! Was gonna add a helpful reply, till I saw it was posted by someone who thinks bikes are rubbish! Good luck with that!
  12. My intro to landrovers was walking down my cousins driveway, hearing a loud banging, to find him adjusting the door hinge on his V8 lightweight with a 10lb lump hammer!
  13. That hammer is PATHETIC! I wouldn't even use THAT to coax the end of a split pin over! You are talking to a landrover mechanic here, hammers START at 6lb, anything less is just a stick!
  14. As a general hint. Ally stuck to steel, if it fits, put it in a pan of boiling water for half an hour, and ANYTHING will come apart. Obviously, only if you're stripping it completely anyway!
  15. Just be careful with calipers, I have found out myself the hard way how easy it is to break an ali caliper trying to get a steel pin out. Don't hit it too hard. Penetrating oil applied lots over time is the safest!
  16. Sounds like he shouldn't be riding. That's the kind of thing that'll kill ya in the wrong place! basic maintenance affects more than resale value!!!!!
  17. Well up for that, I used to live in bath, and midsomer norton, so love it round there.
  18. WOW, Thats good quality for what it costs, I was expecting much worse than that! That could tempt me to get one for that money!
  19. I think a thundercat at 10k would be putting out a lot more than 33bhp! Sounds like fuel starvation to me, or a problem with low charge. Does it rev higher in first gear? Less load, means it will rev higher but use less petrol, ie-will rev less and less high as you go up through the gears, as it will use more fuel to get the same revs in a higher gear. If it's the same exact limit in each gear, I would look a spark issue-coil packs, battery charge etc.
  20. Awesome! Well up for doing this, TC-do you fancy meeting up with us if we plan it for when you come over for the tags? Maybe a practise run next wkd? as long as I get the carbs cleaned out and back on the bike. I just took them off! Matt
  21. Yep, got 2 out of 3 studs out no prob, the last one was absolutely welded in, and boy did we get some HEAT on it! Ended up giving up on it, got a hole drilled out ready, but no way to get a tap handle in due to the frame, had everything but a 5mm spanner to turn the back of the tap! still ready to tap a thread in now, or helicoil if that turns out to be the easiest. Have to say, it's great meeting new people from a forum, and making new friends! Nice to meet you and your dad Gareth.
  22. ROFLOL! Well, I learnt my stuff on Landrovers, so I have about 12 hammers of differing sizes, from tiny 1lb lump hammers, all the way up to big ones!
  23. Mate, don't worry, welding the keepers up is easy as eating a big cake! I'll come down tomorrow and sort it out. Didn't understand what you meant re 'bars' I thought you meant handlebars, are you on about the down pipes? I have got welder, easy outs, taps and dies, and decent drill bits. We will sort it one way or the other!
  24. Got your message, Would have a look at bars, have to be careful cos of the safety implications, but will do if doable. Matt
  25. I'm only in Newport, I could chuck a welder in the back of the car and come try weld a nut on the end for a couple quid diesel money? I have done it before, with success, welding will get the stud proper hot, and that breaks the stiction with the rust etc.
