  1. only been pulled over 3 times in all my years of driving. 1. pulled over for speeding. copper said he didn't have sufficient evidence, but bent my ear anyway - then handed me a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt. (i'd taken it off to get out the car!). But i deserved it, so can't be cross at that. 2. pulled over by the coppers after finishing work (worked at a pub, so drove out the car park, they followed me all the way home). As I got out the car, they asked if i'd been drinking. I said i'd had one when i finished work. They asked if I would mind taking a breathaliser. I said "not at all, but would you like to come in for a cuppa while we sort it out?" They declined and after saying they'd just had one and left me to it! 3. Got pulled over by a copper for driving around in a car with its rear quarterlight smashed out. They asked if it was my car (obviously was) and would I mind if they ran some checks. I said no and since they were outside my house, offered them a cup of tea and somewhere warm to sit while they did it. They politely declined and let me on my way. So tell me coppers. WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY TEA!!
  2. This is amazing. First coutersteering thread that hasn't degenerated into "countersteering isn't a real thing!" I think it's become generally accepted that countersteering is a thing. Those who say it isn't are wrong! It's definitely worth learning positive input into the direction of the bike rather than allowing your subconscious to modify your direction as it's also true to say that subconsciously, you will countersteer. It makes the swerve on your mod 2 a doddle knowing about it.
  3. you'll get an engine that's a little bit "surgy" when holding a constant throttle.
  4. entirely the opposite for us. They were hopeless. We sent the application off in good time as we have plans to attend a friend's wedding in september - it's a good job we did! We sent off the relevant documentation with the photograph countersigned. Then waited. They contacted our counter signatory and asked her to provide proof of her profession - she rang them to ask a question, they didn't note down that conversation in the log and subsequently rejected the application on no communication. We had to find an entirely new counter signatory from their seemingly random list of professions. Anyway - we did manage to find another, and got things signed off and sorted and the passport has come back. Not until after being called a liar by the pleasant woman at the passport help desk.
  5. nope, I passed my driving test in the late 90s. At the time, I was fed with the line from my mother "if you touch a motorcycle, you will die immediately." I thought i didn't want a bike for years. Then I could no longer afford to run a car and looked at a bicycle. during those 9 months of not having a car, I coveted a motorcycle! I got my bike license 2 years ago approximately, although it's been some time since i've been on a bike since some scrote relieved me of my bike!
  6. never lend more than you can afford to lose. (same applies for gambling)
  7. I am in Leeds, however electricity to me is like black magic. batteries contain whizzy magic. put magic, fuel and air in your bike and it makes forward motion. This is now on the internet, so becomes fact!
  8. I agree with everything said here! The wife is currently off with our 9 month old - when she does go back to work, he'll be in a montessori school - because it's a way for him to develop and learn and do things with his time. When at home, the wife doesn't have the TV on at all during the day. We have 1 or 2 plastic toys that make noise, but quite honestly, they drive me insane! he prefers his stacking toys, spinning toys, toys with wheels, and toys which he can manipulate and tap together. pressing a button is hardly going to improve his hand eye coordination. He has his occasional cry - but shows a great deal of patience as well. He loves his food, loves his bananas especially. He loves music and likes nothing more than tapping on things and listens attentively when the banjo is out. I put this all down to the stirling work the wife is doing every day in keeping him entertained. She thinks she's not doing a great job and is somehow failing him - but you only have to look at him to realise she's not. Oh and when he gets a bit older, i have a few motorcycle related toys!
  9. I'd be real tempted to just get a couple of rattle can clear coats to throw on the bare, partially rusted metal. I love that look. for the frame, i'd powder coat. I think i read somewhere it's about £60 to get a frame done in black. Sometimes you may be able to get it done cheaper if you're willing to go with whatever colour they're doing on that day.
  10. if you're worried about having never ridden before. pop over to geton.co.uk who allow you to arrange a free taster session with a local school. This gives you a head start on CBT day! I went in cold and was fine (if a little wobbly!)
  11. They will send you through payment in the form of travellers cheques and ask you to cash them. there will be a little more as well if you could hand that back in cash...
  12. I passed my driving test 16 years ago. bike test 2 years. In my years, it's been advised not to do it. I suspect it's a bad habit picked up rather than something that was taught.
  13. Well done. keep it up! soon you will forget that you ever smoked!
  14. That's no way to talk about my wife!! on a serious note, I saw these on the news yesterday. I'd really love to visit them if I'm in the area one day. I do wonder how many beautiful structures are hidden away - and have been a follower of urbex for some time, although never actually visited a site.
  15. Thing is, it's not a laziness thing. It's purely a security thing.
  16. you don't even need to know how to filter to pass DAS. why they would put it into a CBT is a little beyond me. It's an advanced skill that you should pick up when you have proper confident control of the motorcycle. I remember struggling with what pedal did what on my CBT and wouldn't have thought of filtering! On the whole though - I disagree with making the CBT a 2 day affair. Too many hoops to jump through. It will probably end up putting some new riders off. Time to stop wrapping bikers in cotton wool and maybe spending the money on giving some drivers free eye tests.
  17. I would park in the areas with the highest footfall. It's all too common for supermarkets to put the motorcycle parking around the corner and out of sight. If this means taking a car parking spot... so be it.
  18. The second you get rid, you will regret it. i can say that for certain.
  19. it's pretty criminal how ambiguous the laws of the road can be.
  20. i think also some councils have a default rule - especially those in that london.
  21. well done! i wish they had e-cigs when i quit. i might not have had so many false starts! I quit in 2007. i gave myself 3 reasons to quit. money. wife. health. As i said - i had a few false starts. smoked a few while playing golf, a few while at work and a few on long motorway journeys. Then i smoked one one day and threw up all over. I've not touched one since! I will have the very occasional cigar. my last cigar was 3 years ago. Stick with it. it's great not smoking. you don't miss conversations because you're always outside. you don't miss parts of the gig because you're on the smoking balcony. you don't have to sit in the smoking area in gatwick (which is very depressing!) Well done and keep it up!
  22. I'd be tempted to go with the marauder. at least you can get parts easily enough for it and there's a haynes manual for it! marauders are also a lot cheaper than the intruders, the only real difference being 1 fewer cylinders on the marauder.
