I repaired my rear wheel bearing yesterday and so went for a little test ride, it was much better, back to normal. On the way back home, was on a roundabout and just straightened up to exit, a blue sports car (TVR I think) obviously not looking, just pulls out without stopping.


Luckily I reacted quick enough and swerved round it, but doing so meant I ran too wide and bounced off the kerb, slipped on some gravel and slid on the tarmac a few metres. The git didn't even stop :x


Luckily I was wearing all my gear! but there was oil all over the road, I couldn't tell where it was coming from at first. Turned out to be the left hand side engine casing (if you get what I mean, there was a hole in it from where it'd scraped along the floor.


I tried to check if the engine was OK, but it wouldn't turn over. The indicators at the front were flashing double rate, and the rear ones not at all, all the dashboard lights were fine, and headlight still worked. Don't know why this is?


Checked fusebox but the ignition fuse looked fine.


Any ideas?

Sorry I cant help with the problems with the bike, but I am from Sheffield and will keep an eye out for this twat in a blue TVR.


Cannot imagine many of those in Sheffield.


I know it wont really help but he didnt even stop to say sory mate I did not see you. What a prick!!!!!


What rounderbout did this happen on?

It was in Rotherham at the time, was gonna go past Rainbow BMW Motorcycles, so it's from centenary way onto sheffield road, happened outside Saul and Jackson garage

Sucks mate. You could have been seriously hurt and he just drove off. If I hear anything I will let you know, not that it will make much difference now :(

The lights sound like the fall damaged either the connection to the rear (most likely if both have gone, does the break light stil lwork?) or the indicators themselves have been damaged. The front ones will flash faster because the rear ones arnt work (ie. dont worry about them, when the rear ones work they will return to normal. something to do with the amount of resistance in the circuit, someone with better electrical knowledge could explain).


Wouldnt have thought starting the engine with no oil in would be a good move (or was there still some inside?). also the engine would have flooded when the bike was sideways, so letting it drain then trying it might have better success. Otherwise does it spark, starter motor work, fuel lines intact. many things to check, hopefully someone can give you a more structured checklist (EAB i'm looking your way :wink: )

No idea how the indicators are suddenly messing around, unless the wiring shorted out? :?


But those two roudabouts either end of centenary way are a bloody nightmare. Espcially the one at the brinsworth end. A hell of a lot of "people" (Prats) race off centenary way straight up west bawtry road without even a glance over to their right. Nearly been taken off there more times than I can count. :x


Is the hole in the side casing the worst of the damage? If the bike went down on it's left side, could the wiring comming out of the switchgear be damaged? And I believe your right spafe, cutting off the rear lights = faster blink time for the front.


Did you happen to get the details of the other driver that caused you to swerve due to no care & attention/dangerous driving?

by a hole in the crankcase cover do you mean the cover has come into contact with the floor and somehow put a hole in causing oil to leak ? if so sounds like a new cranckcase cover ?

first thing you have to NOT do is start the engine untill you have changed or repaired damaged casing as running bike with no oil will wreck it.drain whatoil is left in the engine and remove and replace casing new gasket refill with oil.remove spark plugs as the cylinders might be full of petrol and then try and turn engine over with plugs out do it by hand if you can rather than starter motor incase it is full of petrol dont want plug sparking just as it chucks fuel out of plug hole.indicators and lights not working check usual things like bulbs as the shock could ofblown them and as bullet said flas rate will return to normall once you have both front and rear bulbs working again

Hold it! They won't fit matey. Sorry, but you'll need the correct engine casing for that model. :(

Can you not get someone to weld it up for you? I know I got my DR650 case welded by an aluminium specialist ( via the bike shop ) and it lasted another 2 years until i got rid of the bike.

I managed to source a cheap enough cover, so that's that problem sorted :)


Now the electrics...

The starter button does absolutely nothing, but the side stand switch seems to be connected. I can turn my headlights on and switch between low and high beam, but the pass/flash button doesn't do anything.


Dash lights work, front indicators work but flash double rate (haven't checked the bulbs yet), stop light works on the brake.


Any specific symptoms standing out? Haven't had a proper look at it yet, as it's not at my house (happened close to my gf's parent's house)

Check the bulbs in the rear indicators. If they are ok, check the wiring to/from them (they may have been pulled lose in teh crash).


Check starter wires are all still conencted. Check the side stand sensor is still working/hasnt been knocked loose.


Generally check over the bike for any lose wires, or broken ones.

I replaced the LHS engine cover, broke the basket getting it off (lucky I bought one in anticipation), filled it back with oil, and it didn't leak. Hurrah.


The bike still wouldn't turn over, I managed to bump it, so the electrics seemed OK, I figured a broken starter motor, the sidestand switch or some other connection disconnected.


Turns out it was the clutch lever switch that was knackered (should've noticed before, as the bike landed on its left hand side, and the little ball on the end of the lever was grazed), I got it to turn over and run beautifully when I bypassed the switch, just used a bit of wire to connect the terminals in the plug and voila. Only problem with this is the sidestand cutoff switch doesn't work when it's down anymore, but at least I can get to work now!


Just need to find myself a clutch switch, and im set. That and repairing the cracked fairing =/
