Right folks its that time of year again when we do the Keswick weekend :D :D :D

However !!!!!!!!!!!! This year we have gone for a change of location

From Keswick to .......................................... The Yorkshire dales.

Here

http://www.heathfieldhp.co.uk/Pages/Location.aspx

The roads are better and the site looks better. But the format will stay the same.

Gareth will bring the big tent for socialising and eating in

He will also provide (for a small cost) bacon/sausage butties in the morning, a stew/potmess in the evening plus tea and coffee.

We have a real campfire to sit around and have a drink, a laugh and eat.

All you need to bring is your tent, a mug and a SEAT.

Any questions ask.

23rd of August to the 25th

The camp site is fairly large and we need to ride through it to a camping area hidden right at the end.

This is a very flat camping site with a big stream running through it. We can make as much noise as we want this year.

A bigger view of the camping area that is circled in the first image.

For Saturdays ride out I am thinking we can visit Brimham Rocks and the oldest sweet shop in England, taking the long way round :)

This is a review from this year...

The camping at Heathfield has recently had a face lift and it is a very nice and flat pitch with capacity for about 30 tents. Prices are reasonable and the washing/toilet facilities are very good. There is a large presence of static caravans but the camping is on its own in a separate field. There is a shop on site which sells the basics at reasonable prices. There's no play area but there is a recreational hall.

Incidentally further up the road is Westfield and Topfield where there is more camping, but the facilities aren't as good. The pitches aren't as flat but it is much quieter. There's also a section where you can camp along the river and have an open fire.

The surrounding area has tons to do and we managed to pack in loads.

There are walks all around the area to suit all fitness levels. I particularly like the short walk to the Bridge Inn that's about 1/4 mile away. The 1. 5 mile walk into Pateley Bridge along the Beck then along the River Nidd is lovely and mostly off road. If you manage to find the Sportmans Arms (another pub) it's well worth a 3/4 mile walk to.

Although Pateley Bridge is a small town there are 2 very good butchers, along with 2 small supermarkets, 2 Indian restaurants, 2 fish and chip shops, 2 Grocers, a very good bakers, hardware store, pet store and a deli. There's also a music shop, 2 banks, estate agents, charity shop, and excellent wine merchants where he'll try to match you to a good bottle of wine in your price range, which he has done for us several times. They're all friendly and sell quality produce. There's even a Japanese/Chinese restaurant but I haven't been in and it receives mixed reviews.

There are several places to eat, but I can recommend the Granary cafe. Excellent (proper) cappuccinos and home cooked food. I would particularly recommend the Cheese scone, Wensleydale cheese and onion chutney.

The oldest sweetshop in Britain can also be found here where they sell just about any sweet you can imagine or that has ever been made!

There's an excellent council run swimming pool between the campsite and Pateley Bridge.

In Pateley Bridge there is a great little kids play area right next to the bowling green where you can enjoy a rather excellent ice cream (if not a tad expensive) sold from a van next to the play area.

Further afield is How Stean Gorge where you can explore caves and a gorge! There's Brimham Rocks where you are free to explore some unusual rock formations. Parking is a touch expensive but free for National Trust members. Darley Mill at Dacre Bank is worth a visit. The restaurant is very good and it sells home furnishing, cookware, gifts, sweats chocolate etc over 3 floors of a disused mill which still has a working water wheel. There's a Smokery and Ice Cream parlour on the way to Fewston & Swinsty reservoirs but it's quite pricey although does provide quality produce.

You are able to walk round most of the reservoirs in the region which makes for some beautiful scenery. Also try Coldstone Cut. A working quarry viewing area with a bizarre art installations, that's essentially a small street at the top of a hill!

Can't wait to go back as there's still loads to do: Stump Cross Caverns, walk along river Wharfe at Grassington, take the kids Trout fishing at at Kilnsey Wood Park. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Deer Park.

Sounds interesting

I know you say bank-holiday weekend but what days well i supposes nights does that cover?

Is it Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Saturday, Sunday night?

OH and what are the costs?

Going up on the Friday and Saturday then decide if we want to stay the sunday.

Not sure on cost's

last year it was £8 per night camping (not sure if that was per person as I was on my own) Plus what the food and logs come too. I think last year it was about £5 - 7 a day.

  • 2 weeks later...

We went up to see the campsite yesterday, it looks fantastic.

Site fees are going to be £5 per person per night.

The ride out on Saturday will take in Hawes and settle (anyone that has riden the roads around there will tell you how good they are)

So if anyone wants to come along camping or just for the ride out you're more than welcome.

Just add your name below.

It's 200 miles away - pretty damn far on a 125 avoiding mootorways  . And working Thurs & Friday, Wallie is biking down South for more challenge 100 points, I may be visiting family while he's away. Bit too epic atm seeing as I couldn't even bike to London on my own on Saturday - thanks for the offer tho lovely   miss you guys x

Running all the costs today so should have a good idea of cost per head for the food, will sort that as a per day price.

Also so you will have less to carry I can purchase drinks for you and then you can buy them off me when you arrive.

I can even let you have some of my home made wine if you ask nicely :)

Weather report says its going to be 28deg :) Hope its right this year.

Please please bring a chair and a mug with you as every year we end up playing musical chairs! :)

Ill be heading down on Thursday just to get things set up and ready.

My number in contacts is being changed to my new one so may be worth grabbing that (should end in 197)

I will also be checking my Facebook so if you don't have me on that you may want to add me as I will be checking my phone a lot on Friday to help with any issues people may have.

If your going to be wanting food and drinks to be provided then please let me know asap. I've worked it out at £11.50 per day for breakfast, tea and drinks during the day with a small amount towards the coal and wood costs.

Also if you want any alcohol purchasing then let me know and we can settle up at the camp site.
