I use chain wax myself, though you'll get as many recommendations as there are brands of lube. If you commute in all weathers a daily spray of oil during the wet spells won't do any harm, if you're a sunny weekend warrior like myself just do it when it looks like it's getting dry.

I use the WD40 stuff. little bit cheaper than the muck-off stuff and can be procured freely (at a price) at my local halfrauds.

Do not use wd40 it is not a lubricant and it washes grease and oil away

Your chain will wear a lot quicker using wd40!

I use gear oil (80w) never had a problem though I wonder if I had a more powerful bike if it would be liable to fling :?

I can confirm it does

and I use 90w which is thicker

thought as much, I have tried wax etc but found my chain rusting which never happened with oil.

the thing with wax too is all the road grit sticks to it making a grinding paste

Use Castrol Racing lube on mine and tend to clean and relube it at least every 500 or so miles. Probably every 2 weeks over the summer, over the winter every trip out, but winter trips are rare things these days.

Scottoiler......job done.....

+1 for Scottoiler, then put used engine oil in it

this reminds me, I need to fit my old scottoiler to my new bike. Job for the weekend me thinks

I use chainsaw oil from a local tool shop. Cheaper than branded motorcycle chain oil, and stickier so less fling.

I have also used it in a Scottoiler - which is a brilliant device.

wd40 brand chain lube, cleaner and wax. should have qualified that. NOT the general purpose lubricant!
