Hi all, picked up my 2000 GSXR750 today, took it for a blast up the motorway and have lost my key along the way!!! I have got it at home now and am going to order a whole new ignition barrel and fuel locking cover. Before I order these has anyone else had this problem or can anyone else offer a different solution?

If anyone has had to replace the ignition barrel on a Gixxer, can you please tell me how difficult it was, thanks,

Wayne.

is it not coded into the ecu on those bikes if it is then you have got big problems otherwise before you go buying new locks strip the front down so you can get the top yoke off and see the base of the ign switch itself and see if there is a serial number there if there is then a key can be cut to that number, you can also call out a lock smith who can pick the lock to get the tumbler settings and cut you a new key from a blank he should carry if he is any good at his job

The key was in the ignition but I guess it was too loose and came out whilst riding.

I don't know if it is coded to the ECU as the bike stalled 2 or 3 times on the way home but I was able to start it again whilst the ignition was still on but without the key. I am waiting a callback from a mobile vehicle locksmith and take it from there. What a ball ache!!!!

I have known it to happen

This is a common problem on some bikes

Your key is not coded to the bike so you can just get a new ignition tank lock and seat lock

The ignition is held in with torx screws that are thread locked in

easier to get a key cut stu in that case and cheaper i would of thought unless very lucky and it saves messing around forcing the other locks open.............................moral to this story is always have a spare key at home if you buy a bike with one key get a spare cut and keep it in a safe place

the barrel is shagged steve it needs a new barrel

the key shouldn't pull out when the ignition is on

the barrels wear and need to be replaced

thats very true needs a stringy plastic thing with buldog clip on the end and clip it to one of the cables or fairing steadys so if it does jump out it cant be lost

but then you have the problem of someone been able to start it without the key too

Unfortunately I lost the one and only key before I even got home! I am getting out there tomorrow morning and hopefully I can remove the ignition barrel and gain access to the bottom switch and turn it manually to turn the ignition on. I can then ride it to my mates garage and lock it away until my new bits arrive. It's runny rough and idles at 800, it also stalls when engaging first gear and rolling off at low speeds in first and second. I am going to hopefully get it started and adjust the idle, I'm also going to lift the tank to check for any damaged or kinked pipes. I'll get it into dealer mode and check for any faults and also check the throttle position sensor. Any ideas what else is worth checking? Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

if the red oil/FI light isnt on then you have no error codes and they are all erased when you switch the ignition off

I dont think you can separate the barrel easy enough and there is a resistor in the ignition that the power has to go through otherwise the bike wont start

try other keys to see if you can turn it!

My old fazer had a loose key I was paranoid the whole time I owned it. My dad lost his key on his old z1000 from years back but managed to retrace his steps and found it, so not all that uncommon.

As already said see if you can find the seriel number and have Suzuki make you a key up.

Unless you fancy replacing the barrel and disarming the immobiliser if you have one

Okay so, I managed to disassemble the ignition and get out the centre part with the waffles. I got a blank Suzuki key from Taunton and was able to file it to bring the waffles down. I can now turn the bike on and off but cannot open my fuel flap. How do you remove a locking fuel cap without a key? Chuffed I can now start the bloody thing!!!

I got to the back of the ignition barrel and undid the two anti theft torx bolts and then I persuaded the barrel to come away from the triple tree. I undid the two screws at the front of the barrel housing and viola! Pull the wafer barrel out nice and gently.
