Joeman Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I've taken my private plate off my car and its currently on retention.Should I put it on my bike or not??What's the general consensus on bikes with private plates??Will it make me and my bike too memorable? Quote
Gin Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Do you often ride so badly that you're worried about being remembered? If you already own the plate, I don't see why not. It's a waste otherwise! I was considering a private plate for the Sprint because she's so special to me.. Just never got round to googeling the rules and regulations! Quote
Arwen Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I'd say go for it. It's you plate after all. I am toying with getting a private plate, the one I want is due to drop in price this year/next year. - AR07 WEN thankfully it looks like a normal plate, unless you know me. I can however only put it on my bike, as my car is just too old . So anyone who knows about the bike will also know it's a private plate as the MSX was not produced untill 2013! Quote
Hoggs Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 eeeeeeeeeeee I'm not a fan of private plates I'm afraid But mainly in London they are on chelsea tractors and say things like SW466ER (with yellow screw caps to make the 6s look like Gs) or B16 B01 or other pretentious twaddle. On cars they are very noticeable, I saw one on a bike and on a square plate it's not as noticeable (and I'm guessing his was just his initials)I also once saw a Ferrari something with the number plate 8YE 8YE.On hindsight I don't like people that have stupid private plates that say stupid things. Quote
Gin Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Pretty much my view too.. If it's your name or just something personal to you then cool. But the obnoxious ones on, as Hoggs so aptly pointed out, Chelsea tractors or boy racers corsas.. Yeaahh.. Especially the cap trick! Or even worse electric tape (Illegal I know..) Quote
Hoggs Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I used to see a guy on a Harley who had one along the lines of D86 HOG which is acceptable in my incredibly fickle and ever changing rule book Quote
Chrissb6 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Mine tallies up with my name, D.O.B and the source of work where the money came from to buy it. Quote
Hoggs Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Mine tallies up with my name, D.O.B and the source of work where the money came from to buy it. *checks book* yeah that's allowable. Quote
Joeman Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 Do you often ride so badly that you're worried about being remembered? Haha exactly!! The bike only comes out when I'm in the mood for some spirited fun My plate begins with my name (JOE) spelt correctly - no dodgy screws or tape! I think it will look cool, but I know many people think they look pretentious.Having said that, I've had it on my cars for the last 12 years and its never bothered me.. So not sure why I'm hesitant to put it on my bike.. Quote
Hoggs Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 *checks book* as long as it doesn't end with "R0X" I'll allow it. When I dropped my bike off to get the puncture fixed I was asked my registration so I said "X" at which point I was asked "OOh a private plate?" "No, just old" Apparently it doesn't look old (just like it's owner) Quote
Paul-Kent Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I have one on my bike purely because I didn't like the original plate.I know that sounds odd !Chose xtr as its the model of the bike Quote
Hoggs Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Good news Paul, I've checked the book and that one's OK too Quote
Fozzie Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 My dad has one on one of his bikes. It's fairly generic though, it's just one he's always had because he fancied it.Wouldn't worry about people remembering you, on an S1000RR you're out of sight before they get remember your reg One day when I can afford a top of the line Ducati, I'm having "IOU DA4" if it hasn't been taken. Just to give people a laugh as I go by basically. Quote
mattycoops43 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 In the multiple times a day I am cut up by tossers, I would say about 80% are private plates. So when I see one I am already taking evasive action.Burn it. Quote
Bigralphie Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I have a paddy plate ,3 letters 4 numbers its on my ZZR1400 at the momentI bought it hide the age of a mint BMW 525 I bought off a friends grandad 15 years ago only paid 5k for the car and everyone thought I had robbed a bank lol I have had the plate so long now I cant part with it Quote
MrBrightside Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I think the right plate on the right car/bike can be cool, but some look cringy or cheesy as fook. But if you already have it, bung it on I say Quote
Tankbag Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I've seen one on an R1 ' PA55 UBY' the 55 were stylised to SS.I'm not bothered either way, if folks want to spend money on them or not, who cares. Quote
Guest Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 At the Garden centre on Sunday I saw.. for the first time and probably the last in my lifetime. a very BLACK Rolls Royce Wraith. £450,000 worth of Motorcar.. Im not 'into' cars at all.. but it impressed me. the number plate on it was personalised.. but in the cheapest way possible. a 'modern' numberplate that formed a name.. but it wasn't particularly obvious and didnt stick in my mind at all. probably cost a few hundred (if that) And to be honest that impressed me as much as the car.. not much vanity involved with that man.I very frequently see a Volvo with the number EY 1 and that really does impress me, the plate is worth far more than the car. I would guess it was bought as an investment.. much safer than money in the bank.Several years ago I passed a fairly battered 4x4 on the M1 with the numberplate MAG1C and waved at Paul Daniels driving it. (he waved back too)I wouldnt mind a non dated plate.. 6 digits. for the sake of neatness more than anything else. but even they can cost £100s and its not even close to being on any kind of priority list. Ratser Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Yes. I have one on my blade tho so may be a little biased. Quote
Scud Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 We have one on our L200, it's an old P reg plate, the truck is a 2008, but is battered enough to look p reg! I wouldn't spend any money one one (the one on the truck belongs to the mrs from way back), I think it's probably cheaper to change my name to match my number plate! Quote
Tango Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Not a fan of personalised plates.......but, each to their own....... Quote
