Paul-Kent Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 I've just heard that Aussie firm Bunnings warehouse is buying homebase. When I was in Sydney in 2014 I visited a lot of their stores and the way they are set up and run are a world apart compared to what we have here.I just hope the same ethic is going to be introduced over hereExciting times [emoji41] Quote
soll Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 problem being you'll have chavs in the store rather than australians Quote
Paul-Kent Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Sometimes there's not a lot of difference [emoji6] Quote
Gin Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 But it will be so much easier to find a 2x4 to accidentally drop on their head in a well organised store! Quote
Hoggs Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Ah the love-hate relationship with Homebase! I hate going there but I love buying things to make my house shiney and new with! Quote
Gin Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 *Searches for half an hour.. Gives up and goes to walk out / find the next item on your list*.. *Stumbles across the original item you were looking for*"What the heck are you doing in this section? Who in their right mind would put X in the Y category!?".. Yeah I'm not a huge fan of their lay out either.. Though I really like Screw-fix! Quote
Fozzie Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Ah the love-hate relationship with Homebase! I hate going there but I love buying things to make my house shiney and new with! B&Q has the best layout I find. Although I go to Wickes mainly for basic electrical supplies as it's not too bad in that regard. Everything else they are substandard. Screwfix is expensive, but as it's a click and order thing I don't mind some of the stuff they do. Homebase is a bit of a mess so I don't even look now, I just track down a member of staff and get them to show me around.Staff are a bit weird though in the homebase near me, I went up to a young lass to ask where a light fitting was I needed. She was showing me around when very suddenly she stops, looks at me scared and asks "Is there chocolate on my face?!". I looked, answered "eeerm... no" and then she acted massively embarrassed and more or less ran off... I was just left there like "wtf". Left me next to where the light fitting was though! Quote
Paul-Kent Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 In oz each department has it own specialist staff member so there is no running around the place looking for someone. It's so well set out too.Like I said, I hope they run uk versions the same as over there Quote
klingelton Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 All the homebases near me are either closed or turned into an argos.I'm fond of Screwfix, but then it's a short distance from my house and is no fuss. they do decent tools at not extrotionate prices - enough for the enthusiast anyway. e.g. we had a blockage of the drains. dynorod wanted £75 to come out and sort it. £15 rod kit from screwfix and 30 mins work cleared the blockage. i had all the neighbours out thanking me! Adam Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 B&Q used to have specialists for each department, mainly retired builders, plumbers etc however they were classed as experts and got a higher salary so of course they've now got rid of them. Screw fix isn't so bad with a trade account but the problem is you can get everything cheaper online. Quote
NeilM Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Free coffee at screw fix with a trade card. Quote
Joeman Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 I prefer toolstation. I think it's generally cheaper than screwfix.. That might be completly in my head, but generally I find toolstation better. Quote
Guest Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I now spend all my working life fixing panel saws in B&Q. The attitude of the public to the staff in places like this is shocking. Quote
Wrenchmonkey Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Me and Mrs Wrench are about to embark on restoring our new house knocking down walls, new kitchen new electrics, plumbing, new wooden flooring tiles etc. HomeBase, B&Q and wickes seems like a home from home at the moment with he amount we visit those places. I love it haha Quote
MrBrightside Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 problem being you'll have chavs in the store rather than criminals Fixed. Quote

Mr Fro Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 The only time i use B&Q is if im desprate for something and everywhere else is shut.Massivly overpriced even with there trade discount.Tradepoint is a massive waste of time. So few things are on it and most of the things that are have a weensy discount.Anyroad, I get far better prices, service and delivery on my Ridgeons account. Quote
Wrenchmonkey Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 We are ripping up the crappy laminate flooring the previous owners had and laying down some new wooden floors in the next week or two. We had a look at B&Q price wise they seemed a lot cheaper than tops tiles. Where else do suggest that is good quality but not a complete rip off? Quote

GazW Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 See it as an investment. You don't get cheap good wooden flooring. I've been a floor layer since I was 17.Don't go to b&q for wooden flooring. Have a look at haro. They're shit hot, I've never put down one that looks bad.Listone wood is incredible but you'll pay through the arse for it. Stick it down rather than float it. Undercut the doors, take off your skirts. It's more work, but there's nothing worse than a solid floor ruined by shitty looking scotia. Quote
MrBrightside Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 ...take off your skirts... Ok so I might have been hasty in my earlier comment....carry on... Quote
Wrenchmonkey Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 It's a shame your all the way over in Bolton @Gaz W. I'm going out of my mind with all the options 100% wood Vs engineered wood vs just getting some slate or marble tiles. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 have a look in wickes as well they seem to have some good deals at times Quote
