I have a tool kit gifted to me about 12 years ago, but whilst it has been useful I don't think it's high quality -

I recently broke the ratchet of the socket set..

However I'm struggling to work out what I should buy instead, what brands are decent e.t.c., what do those of you who work on your bikes recommend as a starting point?

As above Halfords professional range are excellent, come with a lifetime guarantee as well, you break it they replace it.

can't say fairer than that.

I also have a good set of Allen keys and ratchet spanners.

Yea forgot about those.

I am building my collection of halfords professional stuff. Nice quality, and frequently the sets go on sale.

Currently contemplating buying a set of JIS drivers. Dead useful for anyone with a Japanese bike.

Actually, I ordered some JIS screwdrivers from Amazon.....they came from Japan, but arrived within 2 weeks......nice screwdrivers too....... 8-)

Another vote for Halfords Advanced Professional, and make sure it's the "Advanced" range with the lifetime warranty.

The big socket sets (150-200 piece) are a good investment and will cover a lot of bases.

They don't do everything though and you need to fill some gaps such as screwdriver and plier sets. Other brands which have great quality (in some cases as good as Snap On but without the price are) Teng Tools, Bahco, and Brittool.

+yetanother1 for the Halfords Pro sets.

Had mine for mmmmmmmmyears and it's still doing sterling service.

Then, some more ratchet spanners - nothing is as sexual as a ratchet spanner.

Then, almost everything on the Adventure Spec website.

Don't buy the Halfords sets at full price. They are regularly sold at 50% off so wait until that happens. Decent kit for the money, I've never found mine wanting even after two complete nut and bolt rebuilds.

Do you mean like now as the have a father's day "sale"

Yea there is rarely a need to pay full price for halfords pro/advanced tools.

This spanner set was on offer for £15 a few months ago.

Combined with my magic "15%" discount card I got it for £10!
