TimR Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Have you been made aware its an import btw ? As the ninja branding did not appear on the zzr in this country . Check to see if cdi's differ on various country due to emission regs etc Quote
leener Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Have you been made aware its an import btw ? Good point! I would only 'assume' you could get any old replacement, but you must check before buying. There could be a lot of difference between an import and our typical zeds. Only a week before she died i had to get new start stop cluster and new horn, high beam etc cluster as the insides of them had manged to get burnt out.. No kidding .The rectifier would be my first suspect, and then chase the wiring around. I had a real bug in the electrics of my old zed. When I got the loom apart, I found a real cluster-fup of problems. Quote
Hoggs Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 my ninja wiring is about 80% electrical tape and as everything kinda works I'm too scared to try and sort it out Quote
TimR Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Also check its the right cdi for that model D series and E series are different if memory serves Quote
st3v38772 Posted January 4, 2018 Author Posted January 4, 2018 I must admit that once i started to dismantle my bike i noticed that the engine is a zx6 engine.. im begining to realise that my bike is not all it seems. The clusters that i mentioned earlier i got second hand replacements which are fine but when i searched for 1998 ones they were completely different.. in fact 1997 ones were the right ones to get. Ive got my cdi unit off my bike today and im having it tested tomorrow. I pretty certain its fooked though.. im determined to get my bike sorted. And with all the advice off you guys im sure ill get there.. cheers guys Quote
fastbob Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I would agree with Leener, I reckon the rec reg is the gremlin at the heart of your troubles. ( still reckon dirty starter motors can give false symptoms of charging failure as well ) Quote

leener Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 1993/ 4 was the changeover from d to e .. noted by the roundness of the rear end panels on the e series I had both the D and E models, and they are entirely different. The engine, carbs, CDI, all of it. This one is the E model (much nicer looking one) - so you really need to be certain that you have the right one before buying anything.I had a guy with a fupped up E model that he wanted a replacement engine for, and he tried to buy my D model engine off me. In theory he could have done it, because the engine mounts were the same (I think). But, would need different carbs, inlets, and everything else. Plus, the D model wasn't as powerful. Quote
st3v38772 Posted January 5, 2018 Author Posted January 5, 2018 My bike has defo got a zx engine in it. Think the previous owner may have got a little carried away with the decals and sold me a dud lol Quote
JRH Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 Kawasaki model names often bear little resemblance to the factory code.My 1987 GPX750R F1 was factory code ZX750F. this was the engine and frame code prefix.Your ZZR600 isVIN ------------- ----- model ----- code ---- yearZX600E -------------- ZZ-R600 ------- 6 ---1998See here for full listhttps://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/kawasaki-parts/kawasaki-model-identification.aspx Quote

leener Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 Hi again guys.. problems problems problems.. new carbs.. 3 ECU's reg rec...plugs... leads and my bike still wont start. Any new advise lads CheersSteve Dude... You replaced the carbs, three ECU's, rectifier, plugs, and the leads? All of that? Had you done any tests on these first? And, have you checked the coils for correct resistance, according to the Haynes manual? Only things I can think of that will prevent a start, with the old Zed, are:Plugs badly burnt or soiled,Leads damaged,Coil failure,ECU/CDI failure,Air filter totally clogged,Breather hoses clogged,Fuel ways blocked or damaged,Carbs have blocked jets, floats, needles obstructed,Earth / wiring problemMy zed had serious issues with the electrical wiring. So I stripped it and sold the parts. Quote
SlowBusa Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 Compression test or leakdown? As said at the beginingAlso have you checked the spark to make sure it is on all cylinders AND the spark is healthy? Quote
0281-E Stuart Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 As stated above, check for a strong and obvious spark.Sounds like you may have a dodgy earth connection, trace back from the coils to the earthing point and make sure that the bolt is tight and the terminal connector is clean and corrosion free.Otherwise check your battery connection and the main fuse on your positive battery terminal. With all of the new parts it is odd it won't start!!Best of luck, Stu.Edit: What do your plugs look like after cranking the bike? If it smells of fuel and the plugs are wet, that is not your problem. It sounds like an electrical fault to me. Quote
st3v38772 Posted February 7, 2018 Author Posted February 7, 2018 Hi yeah. Plugs smell of fuel. Driving me crazy Quote
st3v38772 Posted February 7, 2018 Author Posted February 7, 2018 Yeah i initially had all parts tested to cancel the fault 1 by 1 and all electrical parts were working except the ecu i was getting bad readings from so i purchased another and readings were dodgy again. So i got a 3rd and still bad readings. Surely i cant have tried 3 dud ones. Grrrrrrrrr Quote
st3v38772 Posted February 7, 2018 Author Posted February 7, 2018 Hi guys.. do any of you live near swinton at all to maybe come look at my bike. Obviously id pay you for your time. Let me know...RegardsSteve Quote

fastbob Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 Just a cautionary tale before you spend any more money. My GSXR started to lurch and hesitate under acceleration. I spent days removing the carbs and checking things like diaphragms , jets and float heights . I replaced the emulsion tubes , cleaned the air filter , replaced the ht leads , rebuilt the fuel tap, changed the plugs and inspected everything electrical. To cut a long story short guess what the fault was ? It was actually a worn side stand bracket ! Over time the hole in the bracket had become oval so that the tab that operates the cut out switch wasn't pushing it in far enough. One clout with a hammer and back to normal. So the moral is, eliminate absolutely everything before jumping to any conclusions. Quote

megawatt Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 Just spoke to my mate. Sorry he's too busy at moment. Quote
st3v38772 Posted February 12, 2018 Author Posted February 12, 2018 Hi guys....ive had a bit of a curv ball thrown into the mix this morning.. it has been mentioned that my ignition barrel may be to blame for me having no ignition and weak spark.. not entirely sure this is true or not.. can you shed any light on itCheers fellas.
