Ian Frog Posted June 16, 2020 Author Posted June 16, 2020 Fraid not but an interesting read nonetheless. The article i am thinking of was good at laying out the properties and differences ie cfm against pressure and what capacity for different types of tools. My little Ingersoll Rand is struggling to keep up and I wanted to check what I thought I knew when looking at what is available. Cheers Ian Quote
Stu Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 What are you looking at using the compressor for? Quote

Old-codger Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 I cant be specific but i think it was about a year ago, have you looked on the classic mechanics website for any clues. Quote

Good call I am convinced it was that magazine and I think it was written by the guy who now does the tool of the month stuff.I am looking to power spray guns and occasionally impact wrench and diegrinders but to keep noise down so need to be looking at 2nd hand as new quiet stuff is very pricey. Cheers Ian Quote

Cheers Ian I go one of these recently https://www.sgs-engineering.com/sc90b-90-litre-air-compressor-14cfm Its fairly quiet and its a bit of a monster to be honest Quote
Bender Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 What are you trying to run, any compressor can run high psi the cfm is the issue, compressors have a tank as a store, the motor runs till the tank is full this acts as a buffer, if your drawing more air than the buffer and compressor can cope with you end up having the motor running constantly, the tank becomes redundant and you end up running direct from the compressor with the motor running constantly.2 ways around it, add a secondary bigger tank, it will take longer to fill both but for slightly longer bursts you will have a bigger buffer. Best option compressor that can cope with what your using. Quote

Thanks Bender your Modness lolYes I have used compressors for a while but wanted to gen up a bit before looking to up grade and I am sure the quieter kit is going to be out of my price range if I go new.The one Stu mentioned is fortunately out of stock lol. Thanks for the help so far I will be rummaging about for a slightly larger unit and hopefully I can get something quieter.CheersIan Quote

Bender Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 There are online calculators to gauge what you need, I would love a big quiet one but prices are mental. Quote
Stu Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 For a silent one your talking too much for my liking I had a medium sized direct drive one but the problem with direct drive is they are ear piercing! The belt drive one I have is a different tone whiles its not quiet its more bearable! I can stand next to it without feeling the need to move Quote
Tiggie Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Though not likely, do you have somewhere else you could put the compressor and then just run a pipe/hose to your working area. Thats my plan when sheds finished. leave it in garage and run hose to shed. I should look at a bit of noise dampening though as the bugger wakes me up in in the early hours when it fires up to refill Quote

Tiggie Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Belt drive sounds much more bearable! If I switch off the compressor that would mean I'd have to walk from shed to garage and back again whenever I wanted to use it. Unacceptable, I'd rather wake the neighbours Quote
