Tracer 700 as a first bike

I passed my test back in December (at Macc) and I am now looking to get my first big bike.   I want to use it for a bit of commuting to work and to keep my eye in really and build up some experience.  

 

Would a second hand tracer 700 (circa 2017) be a good first bike?

If you like it then yes it's a great first bike, I think they did a low power a2 compliant one too.

Excellent bike but don't be afraid of its big brother the Tracer 900. You may fine it suits you better for longer.

I looked at the 900 a couple of years ago. Very capable bikes.

 

Then I got silly a bought something totally impractical.

When I returned to biking I also considered the Tracer 900 but fell heavily for the Multistrada instead, helped by the fact I got a brilliant deal on it. I know, insectile, predator style but I still like it!

The fact is if you are lucky to be able to have more than one bike you can buy a practical one and a fun one. Most people need to combine the two in one machine, in which case the Tracer would be an excellent choice.

I owned a Tracer900 for 2 years from 2015. It was Originally called an MT09 Tracer when it first came out and then the following year they changed the name.

 

I've also riddden a Tracer 700 when the 900 went in for service. I didn't like it.

 

If I were you I would go for the 900 out of the two. I think you will outgrow the 700 too quickly.

 

I took the 900 to Germany in 2015 and it never missed a beat. It's a great bike that can do a lot. It's light and nimble and has ample power. Don't be afraid of the size of the engine it's not tuned like sports bike. You may need to change the screen as the OEM is horendously noisy. i think it's a bike you will grow into and will last you a good few years (unless you get the biker's itch before then)

The only reason I changed to the bike I have now is that after two years, well after a year really I found it was limited for my kind of riding. I still loook back with fond memories of that bike though.

I went from litre plus bikes to an MT07 (basically the same bike as a the Tracer 700) and it was a great bike. I did test ride the 900 triple in various guises but never liked it as much as the twin.

 

The 07 is just a very well balanced bike, a perfect blend of power, torque, weight (very little) and economy (lots). It was just a very light hearted machine.

 

I found that the 900 seemed to take itself a bit too seriously yet was somehow lacking. Heavier and less economical than the 07 but with neither the torque of something like a Bandit 1250 nor the outright power of a litre bike.

 

Probably just me, and as ever YMMV.
