Jacket Question for the wise of the group

I have an Alpinestars Ketchum Goretex jacket, which I washed at the end of last year due to bugs and dirt. I kept the temps low (30c) and used liquid cleaner instead of the usual washing powder and no conditioner/softerner. When I wore it out in the rain the goretext had gone, I got soaked. Not a happy bunny.

Do I need to use Nikwax on goretex or has something gone wrong with the jacket?

Thanks in advance

When you say liquid cleaner were you talking regular liquid clothes detergent? If you were your waterproofing is probably gone. The Motolegends website has a long spiel about it but basically washing goretex with any kind of regular detergent kills it. Sorry.

Isn't Gore-tex guaranteed to keep you dry, but should be washed by following the garments instructions, I usually run the washing machine on an empty hot wash first, then wash my gear. Have you thought of sending it back.

This is pure de ja vu. And I’ll give you the same answer again.

You followed the instructions gore have on their website. They are the ones to talk to. They give an warranty that’s independent of the manufacturer of the garment.

you can run. But you can’t hide.

that only applies to any coating applied to the outside of the garment. Not the goretex membrane itself. Just spray on a new coating. (Gore say that too)

You are correct. Apparently tumble drying for 20 minutes helps as well.

I have had many GoreTex items and when they get grubby have washed them fastidiously according to the instructions and with the right fluid. But they've never been 100% waterproof afterwards.

I've had cheaper waterproof items with different membranes and frankly they've been just as good.
