Many people don't understand the subtle difference between the words "moderate" and "modulate".

Well, "moderate" is to chair or preside over a debate or forum to ensure adherence to the agreed rules of engagement.

"Modulate", however, is what you say to your friend when he has been delayed due to his scooter breaking down.
