Hi all, my 1999 Honda Hornet 600 came with a loud Lextek stubby.

Too loud for me, i have tried fibreglass but that didn't make much difference and I was worried about blocking the airflow, home made baffle that made little difference and a universal DB killer from eBay which helped take the edge off it in town  as long as I stay below 4000 rpm.

I recall Motad exhausts, I fitted one to a Honda 750/4 SOHC in the 80s and it  was superb, but they don't exist now.

Ideally I would like a similar sound to when it was new, but I would expect a second hand silencer will be rotten by now.

Is there a solution?

Black widow 230mm GP style definitely won't make your ear drums bleed and most certainly the least stupid purchase I've made this year.

Does yours still have a cat fitted?

Judging by your post I'd be inclined to buy a non OEM original made by whoever does cheap standard replacements

It's got carburetors so I assume never had a cat?

Edit.

Answering my own question, I have found this

Anyone got any experience of the company?

I would have blue as the bike is blue.

Obiously choose as you fancy :) my comment was more covering options to not end up with something too loud. The OEM ebay for £50 would revert all back to standard

I have a 2013 cbr600f so a similar engine although not carb.

I've got a black widow on mine, no dB killer but the cat is still in. It's louder than stock but not too loud about town and sounds good when pushing on.

This one came on the bike when I bought it and I'm happy with it. Loud enough to be fun without annoying the neighbours

Yea It looks like their 360/330mm carbon tip version. Judging by the size differnece yours is the one I'll end up swapping to when I get sick of my daft ear bleeder

Exhaust designs are and what is heard or more like dampened varies.

if you want quieter ones, stainless steel, long body, two or three end cap if they have separate internal chambers with routing like blue flame did yonks ago so if you wanted quieter on the two cap type you left the small cap on as it routed the internal gasses around to the main chamber.

quieter and still ran very well.

louder are carbon fibres, shorter, wider bodies, larger diameter exit caps, More holes if their internal doesnt chamber as it’s just for fashion.

quill is a very old name now and a small British builder, not heard about them for soo long, so still in business im not sure.

Fuel is another brand of the same kind.

these two are certainly on time of fashion of your bike.

pipewerx are at the cheaper end of possible and are still in business last i saw and not shite, worth a look.

black widow and scorpion are newer players, mostly deal in the more modern and very highly made bikes of recent so doubtful if they did any R&D over looks about right…
grps are middle loud, slightly gruff, if a tad flabby imo, If you want something abit

nicer if budget allows , stick to properly designed ones like yoshi or akraprovic, plus you can get them reskinned and packed easily, they have a good resale value.

Don't fit a short end can as I have seen a couple of exhausts melt the rear section on a hornet.

If you ever cut up a standard hornet exhaust. You won't believe how it snakes about inside the outer sleeve. That's why it's so quiet, and weighs a ton.

I had the Mivv x cone on my hornet. Not too loud with the baffle in. Its very compact and light compared to the original.

The Black Widows I have fitted were both very loud, like WWI machine guns. The Akrapovic that came with my present bike can be very quiet below about 5000 revs.

Scorpion are well regarded and been going over 30 years, hardly new to the market.

Black Widow 17 years.

Scorpion as a car exhaust yes but as for bikes no, there upage came from accuiring an other company off memory.

Black Widow was once called Sandy Bike Spares and I have visited their place and seen the lengths they go to to get downpipe fitment correct even to borrowing customers bikes if an enquiry comes in for something they have not done before.

Unlike Kerker I might add that after many years still require major amounts of faffing about to get to fit.

Cheers

My headers and mid pipe fitted great, the decat however didn't fit the double mounting rubbers or pegs what so ever. Decat has ended up with a blob of silicon to help one mounting hole and the other just floats a good inch from the other mounting peg.

The exhaust as a whole fits spot on apart from the mounting rings as described.
