Ian Frog Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 (edited) Just a thought which you might be able to help with. The calipers on the ZRX have that horrible matt gold finish that is a pig to clean ( see attached example) so I wondered as the pads are out and the fluid holes are blocked with bolts would it be worth running through the dishwasher?  Obviously I would either wait till Carol is out or otherwise distracted. Its just that after ages of scrubbing with brake cleaner I dont want to damage the gold finish. Cheers Ian Edited November 20, 2024 by Ian Frog Spelling Quote
Simon Davey Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 (edited) Don't see why not, quite often see parts on YT being "washed", as long as they're dried properly there shouldn't be a problem. Dishwasher is probably mild compared to being 6" from the road at 120Mph.... Ian Frog Posted November 20, 2024 Author Posted November 20, 2024 Copious amounts of brake cleaner already used as first choice but the matt finish clings on to the brake dust residue. I don't own a sonic bath so the dishwasher was an idea. It's more a case of not wanting to go too heavy with scrubbing etc as the gold coating is probably not that robust. Cheers Ian 1 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 I've used a dishwasher and not had any problems. Apart from getting a good telling off of course. 5 Quote
RideWithStyles Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 Baking soda tooth paste and brush, then wash off with  brake cleaner. Or Car detailers spray and clay bar. Quote
husoi Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 https://a.aliexpress.com/_EvsCMI1 Â This looks really good. Maybe worth the Investment Quote
Hairsy Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 I use a combination of paraffin / kerosene and brake cleaner in that order. And various little brushes of different shape - but a toothbrush does most of it. Â If you do try the dishwasher then please report back. If you're using a tablet in there, I think some of them contain salt which you don't really want round your calipers. Quote
Ian Frog Posted November 20, 2024 Author Posted November 20, 2024 For what it's worth this is where I am so far. Both calipers have been through the dishwasher ( with grudging permission lol). Caliper on the right hss then been GENTLY polished using a toothbrush and Solvol being very careful. Now the controversial bit to remove the last of the polish residue following the brake cleaner I have dampened a rag with WD40 and gone round all the crooks and nannys. I have been cautious and the pads are already out and in a seperate bag with the pins etc ( before the inevitable horror stories about lubricant and braking lol ). Interested if I can find an easier way to improve the results? Cheers Ian 2 Quote

From what I can tell the dishwasher tablets don`t have salt, however even if they did the calipers were totally dry when I retrieved them and I always intended to give them a wipe down with brake cleaner prior to pads etc going back in so I am hoping the salt effects will be minimal??? As a footnote I have also carried on cleaning and I have used WD around the seals and outer surfaces (NOTE prior to the re-installation of pads etc). Cheers Ian 2 Quote
linuxrob Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 have you thought of a NON-Acid car wheel cleaner? I use bilt-hamber Autowheel on the car and on the F wheel to remove stubborn brake dust. Bike gets a regular clean first with Bilt Hamber auto foam now called Touchless before a shampoo. The dedicated wheel cleaner is call Bilt hamber Korossol iron and fallout remover (autowheel is a mix or Korosol and their excellent de-greaser Surfex HD, don't use hot ,use and rinse ASAP.  My bandit 6 -pots get ph neutral hot soap and water via stiff brushes of all sizes every 1000-1500 miles or so. pistons pumped out as far as i dare and then dried with air line. very small amount of Red Rubber Grease around the pistons before pushing back and they stay free and ALL come out more or less together. i change my fluid every 2 years and pads when only 2/3 worn to stop pistons coming out too far. in 65000 miles i have had zero issues with these brakes, the dust seals get the most muck, some leave them out, not me just keep them clean.  pics and a link to my u-tube video of cleaning made in 2021  regards  rob B    4 Quote
