1. Funnily enough I was looking at that site yesterday. The the top ones are quite good value for money I think - I'd really like to try before I buy mind you... B&O or Bose would be my preferred option as the sound quality is spot on - probably the closest place to try them is Lahndahn and I'm not really in the mood for a stabbing.
2. I already run a programmable ignition with boost linked ignition advance and a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator. The turbo oil feed is just after the oil filter so I expect that to catch the major lumps of kak.
3. Has anyone got any experience of noise cancelling headphones/similar? My office is quite noisy what with various tea slurpers and keyboard bashers in close proximity and my poor little brain struggles to focus on the stuff I need to do with all the extraneous noise. Ordinarily I'd just bung some music on using my headphones but I find music distracting when I'm writing a report or something - I need quiet for the thoughts to mature and find their way to my fingers. Therefore I want a way to block out sound as completely as possible and funky headphones seem like they might be an option. I'm willing to spend a few hunge if there is a wonder set but cheaper is better. Any info would be great as I don't think there's anywhere near me that has demo sets. Cheers dudes!
4. Yeah, that was the idea - to keep the engine as stock as possible. The only mod I've made to the engine is to lower the compression slightly to give a margin of error. The "gating" is done with the turbine nozzles using a bit of a lash up by converting the old vacuum system to positive pressure. I need to play about with spring rates to get it right. I'd really like an electric system driven by a servo motor - I think the ECU I have will do an on-off at x-boost. A servo that will survive close to the turbo and have enough torque is mo money though...
5. That's impressive, do you know what it was making pre turbo? I guess you will have to give it me if you've got no use for it now 109 bhp - there's a dyno print on the first page or so. I'll probably finish it up, use it for a bit then flog it on. megawatt - The boost gauge is only 1" diameter so the dyno guy couldn't get a good look during the runs - he reckoned it was about 0.7 bar though. I still need to finesse the boost regulation as it's a bit pants right now...
6. I realised that I posted pics of the bike a couple of pages back and I've not done anything about the bodywork since then. Anyway, for the enjoyment of Westbeef and anyone else who still looks at this thread, here's the final dyno readout: I've not really ridden it what with kiddiwink and all that stuff but it goes quite well. The VNT turbo gives it a nice, smooth power delivery unlike a fixed geometry turbo (although I'm planning on sticking one on for shits&gigs) so it's just like riding a more powerful bike. Time wise, it's taken the equivalent of 3 3/4 work weeks to complete and cost a smidge over £1.1k although that includes quite a few components bought in bulk but only a few were used and a few f**k ups along the way so probably £1k once those were taken out. I really enjoyed the build but I doubt I'll get much time to use it.
7. Oh, erm... yeah. Pretty much done. It goes vooooom-tish and all that and it's been dynoed at ~170 bhp. I've still got work to do on the clocks and bodywork and I've got another turbo I want to try. I'll bung up the dyno and some pics when I get a mo.
8. Bloody hell, that's half a mort per horse ride. Bloody dangerous stuff, glad I don't do it!
9. Sounds a little bit warpy to me too. Did you clean the discs before you stuck the new pads in? Sometimes it can be a bit of rust or other gank around the edge of the contact area that can make that kind of noise.
10. fastbob - do you mean all that shite at the bottom of the google browser? If so then I understand - I like google to be clean, not flashing up loads of stuff it thinks I want to see. The good news is that you can turn it off! Stick "chrome://flags/#enable-ntp-remote-suggestions" in to your chrome browser bar and select "disable" under the yellow highlighted bit. You'll need to fully close chrome and reopen it for it to take effect.
11. I dunno, I think you saved that really well! How many people would have stuffed it there? Not me obviously - I would have pinned the throttle, pulled a massive powerslide through that first bend and drifted seamlessly through the second one.
12. I dunno Ian, the discussion seems relatively civilised at the moment. Reading all this stuff makes me want to shuffle over to Rationalwiki for a bit.
13. Yep, went to Jamie's in Cambridge (quite) a few years ago. It was shite and expensive. The only saving grace was it went on the work Amex. I believe the ponciness of a place can be easily judged by the menu - if it uses terms such as "From the land/air/sea" then you know it's right up it's own 'arris.
14. I saw Prodigy at Glastonbury... or was it V99... or was it... to be honest, that summer kinda passed in a smokey blur. What I clearly remember is one, two... one, two........ ONETWOTHREEFOUR! heading in to Smack My Bitch Up. Edit: f**k me, that was twenty years ago! I feel old now.
15. Not mine!
16. You might find the lights are driven directly from the magneto or alternator (delete as appropriate) in which case it's perfectly normal for them to be dim at idle.
17. I can just imaging the conversation with Mr Kawasaki: Designer: Mr Kawasaki, we've made the fairing extra thin and flimsy to save weight and give the rider a better riding experience. Mr Kawasaki: Very good. I award you 10 Kawasaki points and first choice from the pudding trolley. Designer: Gosh, thanks Mr Kawasaki... One thing though, we've had to stick a bast*rd big cage in there to stop the fairing flapping all over the place at any sort of speed. Thus ruining all the previous work we've put in. Mr Kawasaki: 6 months at the back of the lunch queue for you my boy!
18. I dunno. Depends on loads of things - Normally they last a good few years but I've had some cheap pattern parts that only lasted a couple of years.
19. When the seals start to leak.
20. It can take a few pumps of the lever to seat the pads.
21. A few things from me: I bought my zx6r new in 2006 - it's still plenty quick and schweet in the corners. My 24 year old ZXR 750 was *apparently* 118 bhp out of the box. I had it on the dyno last year at 109 bhp. Factor in Speedy's fudge factor and that's near as dammit the same. Finally, if you do feel the need for more juice and fancy a turbo, give me a hollerdonk - the aforementioned ZXR 750 now pumps out 170 bhp.
22. If you factor in half the time sitting round doing not much you should be able to charge your self a nominal fee if you must , where as Mr or mrs shed builder has rates, pensions, wages, materials and vat to add to the lot. Ohhh yea and they are running a business and aiming for min 30% profit and they have to pay tax, which is also factored into the profit req. You can't replace time but it's time well spent. If of course you earn £100 an hour then go to work and pay for it. "Off the peg" sheds a-la B&Q special are cheap but phenomenally shit. Say you pick one up for a few hunge, that's 3-4 hours worth of time you're giving yourself to build a one-off and that's before you buy any materials. With that amount of time you would have just finished the design!
23. K reg... 1997?
