I've never done carbs but, at work, if we struggle to get a seal to stay put during assembly we hold it in with a dab of vaseline type stuff! can't see as that would do any harm.

batteries don't like the cold! an optimate is the way forward! failing that, if you're not going to use bike for a couple of weeks take battery off and put somewhere warmer

I absolutely agree with the others! go at the pace you feel comfortable with! you'll probably gain confidence with experience! but! remember!, you can go too slow as many times as you like! you won't get away with going too fast many times
