Ebay for sure. Also, when it's sub zero, I wear a cheap windproof cycling jacket under my textile jacket (on top of a fleece). It was £15, and gives far more warmth per £ than any of my other kit.

My current summer gloves are 2 years old and they're already looking sad. I'd think it was a good idea to get some gear together, starting with the helmet - the ones the schools give you never fit as well as one you get fitted in a shop. And you're going to need the gear as soon as you're through the DAS. But for me, I wouldn't bother with getting a 125 just for a month: too much hassle (and cost too) for too little benefit.

I must practice U turns. I've got a Rospa test coming up on the 11th. The examiner might ask me to do one and I still find them hard.

You'll get the hang of it soon. Bear in mind though that when there are wet leaves or mud or frost on the road, then go a bit more easy... it's only a few weeks away now.

Looks like a fun route. I've got as far as updating my maps. Next step is to try planning a route.

(Must be a nutter to weigh on this one ) I'm with shorty. The message the poster's trying to say is that it's better to wear proper bike gear than to wear normal clothes. Is this true? I see it this way: imagine that you were to put 1000 or so people who'd just crashed while wearing bike kit on your left, and 1000 or so who just crashed wearing a sweatshirt and jogging bottoms on right. I reckon that most (although not all!) people would say that, while the group on the left wouldn't be a pretty sight, the group on the right would look even worse off. Another thing is likely to be true: that there'll be some people in the sweatshirt group on the right who'll be in a better state than some of those who were wearing head to toe kit on the left. Just as there'll be some people who crash in biker boots who end up worse off than if they'd worn shoes (perhaps because they were unlucky and picked a boot that was badly designed, or perhaps they were just unlucky in the crash - I don't know what happened to you, TC ). But in my view, this doesn't mean the basic common sense message of the poster is "all subjective". I'd say it just means that when it comes to what happens to you in a crash, that luck plays a part, and what you're wearing plays a part too.

Basically, you should ride as if the examiner is a disembodied sprite whispering directions in your ear and don't worry about how they fit into the traffic: just ride for you. The examiner is capable of looking after himself. Well, except mine, it seemed. At point I heard a lot of crackling in my earpiece, just as we went past a junction, and when the crackling stopped, all I could hear was swearing. A few seconds later he swept ahead of me and made me pull up into a lay by at the side of dual carriageway. Then he had me pull out back into the non-stop stream of traffic. We waited a good few minutes for a gap before he told me just to go for it whatever. We then spent a good 15 minutes going up and down the A14 to the next junction and back again, and then it was time to go back to the test centre. I passed

I felt similarly about mod 2. There's so much to think about: the bike, the road, the traffic, the speed limits, the traffic (again), life safers, indicators. But I got through (second attempt). I think it became easier when I realised all you had to do was ride safely.

Yup. TC posted on a thread recently saying that helmets don't degrade while they're sitting in the box on the shelf.

I've tried using Basecamp and didn't much like the look of the maps. But I didn't realise that it promised to transfer the exact route to your Garmin - that's such a useful feature I think I'll download it again and give it another go.
