Use the tester, that should show any problems. Personally I use a Martindale unit which also shows whether the voltage is correct. Not sure if the Maplin one does.

No. The bobbins screw into bosses which are are part of the swinging arm. Looks as though your bike does not have them so you would need a stand with cups to fit under the swinging arm. Stand with cups to fit under the swinging arm. These are bobbins fitted to a swinging arm
