  1. Ok quick update. I satin the shed for a few hours this afternoon, had a beer and cleaned everything thoroughly. Installed new seals and put pistons back into place. I now have the calipers back on the bike now, just need torqueing up. I gave the problem helicoil one final try and managed to get the insert flush one side then tidied up the back end so that was flush too. Probably would have been easier if I had used the correct length insert but I think it will do for now. Here is my next issue though, I filled the brake fluid reservoir and started to pump the lever but it just pumps endlessly, there is no pressure to push the pistons out. Does that mean it needs bleeding> which side do I bleed first? oh and how exactly do you bleed the system? Thanks for all the help so far.....
  2. Ok so I have this clear in my head I need to order m10x1.5x1d inserts?
  3. Very kind offer Stu, just having a look on eBay to see how quickly I can get one, assuming I order the right size of course. Well the offer is there of you need it providing I do have one which I'm positive I have as I had the same job as you last year I doubt that it was the same job Stu. I would bet a good amount of money yours wasn't the clusterf**k mine has become. looks like taking the car to work this week.....
  4. I have the right hand caliper off now so will give both sets of piston a going over with brake fliud. The brake hoses are kind of hitched up on the bike suspended by string, the reservoir is still full of fluid. probably no doubt I have introduced air into the system so then will need to be sorted but the way things are going that's a way off !

  6. It's out. Have retapped but loathed to try another insert. It's an m10 for correct size for bolt but do I need a shorter insert? Only have one length in my pack
  7. thanks will try that. regarding the length the helicoil looked the right length but I guess it stretches a bit, can this be trimmed down when its correctly threaded?
  8. Pistons are out of front left and trying to clean but have some stubborn gunk that doesn't want to come off. Also see helicoil thread
  9. I really should complete one job at a time, anyway, while my pistons are soaking in some soapy liquid to try and free up the gunk I thought I would try and helicoil a bolt hole. When I praticised on some random metal away from the bike all went well. Now though i'm trying it for real and when screwing in the insert in the tang has broken off mid way through. So now I'm left with some thread hanging out of the hole that I cant screw in because there is no tang. Any fix for this? hope im not the first to do this
  10. Seals arrived today. 25mm and 30mm packs. 5 pairs in each. Are there two seals to each caliper?
  11. that looks spot on, the rubber boots have seen better days so could do with replacing also.
  12. I have some circlip pliers that open outwards, I could use them on the inside of pistons to ease them out. I understand you but not use anything on the outer piston. Having problems sourcing front brake caliper seals. Found rear brake no problem on EBAy, cant find any fronts for a 2004 FZ6 though.
  13. Thanks, I don't have a grease gun or airline though so will try and pump them out together. Do I drain the system first, or does it need the fluid for pressure to push the pistons out, if that makes sense.
  14. My brakes seem to be binding quite badly, clearly a build up of all the salt and crap on the roads at the moment. I try to keep the binding at bay with regular squirts of brake cleaner but want to do a thorough job and extract the pistons and clean, maybe even replace the seals. What is a straightforward way of removing the pistons? I see there are tools for £20 but are there other, cheaper ways? Can they just be pumped out and slotted back in afterward with some grease? If so at what stage do I drain the fluid from the system. Thanks all
  15. I use a public car park every day for work. Just use a disc lock along with the steering lock.
  16. Never even considered security at local petrol stations tbh. Often leave helmet and gloves on the bike too. Obviously would take a different approach if stopped at a busy M way services.
  17. -3 on way to work this morning, didnt see a single other motorbike. Felt very lonely Actually yesterday in the sleet was more more tricky, visor/glasses issues again.
