1. One thing to be wary of it how companies count their maximum NCD. I switched insurers taking 10+ years no claims with me. A couple of years later I switched again, still claiming 10+ years NCD.

Unfortunately I hadn't spotted that the company I'd first switched to counted their max NCD as 5 years, so the second time I switched the new insurers only gave me 5 years NCD as that was what was showing on the last renewal.

Losing 5+ years NCD simply by switching insurers did not make me happy.

Now that's a top tip! Best to read the fine prints folk.

Thanks Mississippi Bullfrog for this info! :thumb:

  2. Hi folks,

I want some input on this as I've noticed on my daily commutes to and from work that all the "experienced" bikers are riding in the bus lane to filter through the traffic queue, the bus lane in Glasgow clearly do not allow motorcyclist to use it but every biker I see is using it (especially in the morning); I just wanted to know if it is common in other cities too and where they stand if they get caught out by Police, it's not uncommon that Police are stationed on the main road I ride from time to time to assess traffic flow but I haven't seen them for a while.

When I mean "experienced bikers" I tend to mean full licensed bikers riding by that are the main culprits more than learner riders, I do see a fair share of them using it too but they tend to follow suit whenever they see someone else doing it as they go pass them, it's kind of like a scene from Wacky races for folk trying to get to work the fastest.

  3. Hi Isaac1993,

Can you let us know who your insurer is? Usually with insurers, as Stu has said, they should try and settle your claim from you first reporting it to your settlement cheque reaching you within 28 days.

I would suggest that if you haven't ready done so to check online for similar model, age of bike, and mileage to your stolen one to get a fair idea of what to expect from your settlement value. As it is a motorbike, they would usually go by market value.

  4. I've had the Dr Marten's Garrick motorcycle boots for exactly a year now and they are bloody brilliant for my daily commute. The best way to describe them is like wearing really comfortable wellies but it's not wellies, them being slip resistant on the soles also helps on those really wet/cold Winter days. I really wish Dr. Martens made a new iteration to this boot as the original one came out so long ago and it's increasingly difficult to buy a replacement when the ones I have now are worn that I need a new pair.

I brought my size (UK 9) in HelmetCity but it's only got size 11's left in stock now.

  5. I bought the Oxford Montreal 3.0 jacket and trousers. Not used them yet but they have decent reviews.

Like RAYK47, I too wear/wore this jacket but the 2.0 trouser for my daily commute and it has held up very well for the Scottish weather. If it's heavy raining, I tend to wear a waterproof layer on top, mainly as another layer to keep me warm but it also dries faster that if I were to just wear the jacket and trouser alone. I've used it everyday this Winter thus far.

  6. Sorry to hear this dynax. I'm sure you will get it next time! 8-)

These things are sent to test us. I have to do a roadcraft and highway code theory test every 5 years the pass rate keeps rising and it's not easy.

Like you say sounds like bad luck. Keep with it and be positive!

Every 5 years! Does your job demand this? Or are you just doing this as refreshers?

  7. I still commute to work but I have definitely seen less bikes at the parking bay where I park up in the morning and same goes for when I walk by it in the afternoons, guess all my local bikers aren't very local so don't want to risk it during Winter, it is bloody freezing in the mornings plus days when it rains so can't blame them.

  8. It sure is impressive what you did julianl, especially on a 125.

How long did the whole trip take you? Cant believe your mate went on a trip like that after just obtaining his CBT, that's insane!

  9. Here is the latest. I have just spoken to my claims handler.

I have to accept the valuation as is for now and that does end the replacement bike whether I like it or not. They are referring up the chain to ask about having the hire bike longer without cost to me. We are disputing the valuation given by the other insurance company.

Because I am third party insurance we are stuck with the claims handling company talking to the third party and there is little I can do. If I was fully comp I am told that my insurance company would be involved and would have paid me or something like that.

The third party have issued a payment which I find insulting on a not prejudiced basis or something that means they have not acknowledged fault yet either.

It seems that even though I do not have enough money to replace my bike it's tough, I can raise it myself with the third party insurance company and I can complain and then take it to the ombudsmen which I will once we have finished through the claim handlers. IS this everyone else's experience?

    Any advice?

Insurers tend to try and settle Total Loss claims within 14-21 days of the accident date but many do struggle to fulfill that target. How long have you been on hire? I guess the third party insurer is trying to push out the settlement cheque as quickly as possible so that they can then stop paying for incurring hire charges. No doubt they would have tried contacting you to offer their services when the claim was logged on their system to mitigate their losses. I think the best form of action would be to not cash the cheque in as they would consider that a form of acceptance, I'm a bit confused from the above if you are dealing specifically with the third party insurer or your own insurer. :?
