Buying gear online?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Where is the best/cheapest site to look for bike gear (helmet, jacket, boots, etc) online?

Alternatively, is there a 'bike superstore' anywhere in the London area that takes the top spot?

Just passed my CBT & looking to get kitted out with gear for a 125,

There's a whole host of online bike stores that you could chose from.....and a lot depends on the type of gear and manufacturers that you want......

Try GetGeared, Ghostbikes, M&P, ........but most of these sites have an eBay shop....so maybe look on there first.....

One word of warning though......I wouldn't but a crash helmet without trying it on first.......they vary quite a lot in size......and the fit is the most important thing to make sure is right..... 8-)

Central London shops are all overpriced!! they have to be to cover extortionate central London rental prices.

if you can shop locally, then you'll find stuff a lot cheaper. :)

I'd go to a local shop, if they sell lids, try lids and find one that you fount that has good reviews, and fits you well.

Remember the size, model ect, then get it online. then you know it fits and you got a good price for it

better still, support you local shops and tell them the Online price and let them match it, or throw in some freebies...

If we all use shops just as a fitting service and then go away and buy online, the shops will all close down, then we'll be stuffed!!

Also, Shops can often do a better deal than online prices because they dont have to factor in postage costs, packaging and the potential of returned goods.

If you can buy from a local shop, please do so else we will lose them :(

The key is having a local/friendly shop. I'm also in Essex and the couple around me have staff equipped with a strong sales push mentality over being friendly and letting you try everything and take your time. I'm sure that doesn't bother everyone but I'm great at taking ages to finalise which jacket/gloves/etc I want :D

Not all online stores are big warehouses.......most specialist shops (like bike gear shops) sell stuff online.....so you're not necessarily taking business away from them..... As an example we have a music shop in Huntingdon selling guitars, drums, Keyboards etc......only a smallish shop.....but they have their own website and sell stuff through that too......same goes for GAK in Brighton....it's just a shop that sells stuff online too....

Just thought I'd throw that in as not all online stores are Amazonesque......

Found this place today

Lots of items on display where you can try out compared a few of their helmet prices online and couldn't find any cheaper. Not exactly on route to Essex but well worth the slight detour IMO

J&s are excellent and have incredible customer service. I can fully recommend.

Ghost bikes have excellent communications, fast postage and good prices for an online shop.

However, I would recommend what I do. Based on reviews choose the kit you want. Then go try it on and buy it from a real shop (supporting your local etc...). I tend to find that they will knock down the price if you know you can get it cheaper online. I am picking up my new textiles on Monday and still can't believe the price I got at the shop (though I did haggle) + they have thrown in some free CE hip armour. I can't find an online price even close to it.

Also, as first set of gear maybe don't spend too much. Just get stuff that is safe and will last a year or two. After a year or so you will know exactly what you want/like and don't need/want. Then you can splash your cash on decent textiles/leathers/helmet etc... You will also have a spare set for a mate, in case you have an off or they get soaked through and need a couple of days to dry out.

Hope that helped

my only local shop was hein gericke which closed down a while ago. Now all there is are a couple of motorcycle shops which happen to sell clothing. There are 2 of these within 30 miles of me and neither have a big range.

If you buy online, make sure they have a good returns policy where you can send stuff back if it doesnt fit
