Robik Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Hi allI have a torque wrench from 28 Nm to 200 Nm. This means that a lot of my bolts and nuts on my bike don't reach this value. The only wrenches i have seen from 0 to 30 ish Nm are really expensive. What do you do about torquing you nuts and bolts to these low values. Thanks! Quote
Gray Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I had a similar issue and the only solution for me was to bite the bullet and buy a lower torqued kit.Recall it was around £70 from Halfords in one of their sales. Not sure of any other workarounds to obtain the recommended torque Quote
Robik Posted June 15, 2014 Author Posted June 15, 2014 Thanks. Yes I can't think of a work around either. I will check out the one in halfords. Quote
Stu Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I have a torque adapter only used it once! You get to know how tight to do them I know people who have stripped threads and snapped bolts using a torque wrench and they weren't near the value!! Don't swear by them Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 i thought there was only 3 torque settings................thats tight.................thats f***ing tight..............and that f***ers going nowhere now Quote
DreamytimeEscorts Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I adopt a policy similar to Mr Fro and EAB: "That's not quite tight enough, a bit more then, that'll do it". Quote
megawatt Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 What they said. If it's a rear spindle nut, it says in the manual " tighten it until you fart" honest !!! Quote
Tango Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Having sheared bolts and stripped threads in the past I now use the torque wrench for most jobs..... Got a Draper 10 - 80nM for £30 at a bike show a number of years back.... Quote
mister-t Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 i brought a clarke torque wrench from machine mart the other day,think i paid about £30 for it,goes from 5 to 25lb Quote
Rik398 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I got the draper 10-80. Only got it for taking the head cover off the engine as didn't want to strip any threads in there. Don't use it that often, hence not worried about it being a cheaper one. Kind of feels strange tightening to a click rather than until it feels right. I usually use to check now, tighten to what I think feels right and see if the wrench agrees. Never too far off anyway. Quote
Robik Posted June 17, 2014 Author Posted June 17, 2014 Yes that feeling is what you would like to develop. Not forgetting that every tool with a different lever arm will apply a different torque for the same load. For my rear axle but its a good thing I had a larger torque wrench. Without it I don't think I would have gone as tight as it needed to be. Quote
Rad Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I know people who have stripped threads and snapped bolts using a torque wrench and they weren't near the value!! Did that and still use the wrench a lot. Numbers never lie If in doubt locktite it. For the low torque values hand is your best tool. Quote
