Internet access weirdness ... any network gurus to help?

Quite regularly, Google chrome tells me "Your Internet Access Is Blocked" and refuses to connect to the internet, no matter how many times I refresh the page.

The solution I've found is to open a command prompt and ping a known URL or I.P. address (typically I just ping Google).

The first ping request ALWAYS times out, the subsequent ones get a response, and then I am able to connect to the net via Chrome.

My other browsers (Opera, Firefox, Internet Explorer) seem unaffected.

Any ideas?!

Is it happening in incognito mode as well? If not then it is one of your extensions playing up. Disable them all then turn them on one by one to see where the problem is.

Also, what OS are you using? Is there any weird DNS servers or strange gateway in your network settings? (cmd --> ipsonfig /all

Well, I tried all the suggestions in this thread (thank you for trying to help), but no dice!

So I didn't fix it ... but I have hacked it! I've stuck an asynchronous curl request (effectively, a ping) into the windows startup sequence. It cures the problem.

What sort of internet do you have?

That sounds like your router is configured not to keep an active connection. Try having a look at the logs in the router and see if you are getting timeouts or if it is dropping the connection.

I've seen similar issues with ISDN and old modems. I can see you might get the same with DSL if the connection is taking a while to initialise.

...I've stuck an asynchronous curl request into the windows startup sequence...

Yeah... that's exactly what I would have done.

Yeah... exactly
