Liveware Problem Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Hello, I've stepped into pitstop again, oh dear.. So I need to adjust the chain on my TT600, a couple of questions:The manual says to check the tension whilst the bike is on its side stand - but presumably I'll have to raise the rear wheel off the ground to adjust the tension. So I must check, raise off ground (I have an abba stand), then return to side stand to check again?Wheel alignment - do I need to check this after the chain adjustment, or is aligning both sides with the corresponding marks on the swingarm sufficient? Not looking forward to this Quote
Hoggs Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 tis an easy job! yes check tension with the bike on the ground, the weight of it will increase the tension slightly. On mine tightening the rear axle also tightens the chain slightly so I factor this in. Alignment can be done on the swingarm marks get it as exact as you can. by eye is fine. slightly on the loose side is better than too tight. factor in enough time to do at least twice on your first attempt Quote
Liveware Problem Posted January 6, 2018 Author Posted January 6, 2018 Thanks Hoggs! I just remember what a pig's ear I made of doing the same job on my ybr some months ago but will give it a shot Quote
Westbeef Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Thanks Hoggs! I just remember what a pig's ear I made of doing the same job on my ybr some months ago but will give it a shot Once you learn how your bike works it’s quick and easy . You’ll get a feel for how much the tension changes when the weights on it . Quote
Liveware Problem Posted January 6, 2018 Author Posted January 6, 2018 So the chain tension seems to be in spec for now, which is lucky as i seem to have lost a vital part of my abba stand (ordered a new bit online)Instead i fitted the aftermarket exhaust that came along with the bike, it's much louder Quote
Stu Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Pah chains You will piss it Liveware ProblemJust check it once adjusted with everything tightened up and aim to adjust it a few times to get it right Don't think you need a lot of turns on the adjuster if it's really loose! It's surprising how quick they tighten up so just go a bit at a time and check itAlso tighten it to the tightest spot on the chain Quote
Liveware Problem Posted January 6, 2018 Author Posted January 6, 2018 Where are you? Reading. And thanks Stu I'll update this when I've actually done it Quote
onesea Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 On mine tightening the rear axle also tightens the chain slightly so I factor this in. I was told by local mechanic to get a rag (or wear gloves) and lift the chain (I put 2 fingers under chain and thumbu on swing arm) to keep the chain tight when tightening the nut. That way tightening does not affect chain tension.Agree RE to lose rather than 2 tight. Once you have run with slack chain you will feel it and know when it needs tightening, I hardly ever check my tension now I just know when it needs doing when I ride her... Quote
