Mickly Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 I’m trying to slowly create a stripped down cafe racer from a lardy 1200 Triumph Trophy, the latest issue I’ve come across is some damage to the swinging arm.I was cleaning all the cr*p off it and uncovered this:Only the previous owner could say how it happened. It’s about 1mm deep. The question is whether it can be polished out without compromising it’s integrity ( it will be powder coated)Or will it need repairing with a infill weld?Or ( heaven forbid) does it need replacing?Any other options you can think of ( a match in the tank is not one I’m prepared to consider) ?Mickly Quote
megawatt Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 Easy repair for a decent Welder. Polish around weld after and maybe powder coat. Quote
Mickly Posted March 9, 2018 Author Posted March 9, 2018 Easy repair for a decent Welder. Polish around weld after and maybe powder coat. What kind of £££ would I be looking at? Quote
megawatt Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 Dunno mate. Depends how greedy he is. Less than £50 I would guess. Quote
fastbob Posted March 10, 2018 Posted March 10, 2018 There are a few on eBay at around £50 - £60 Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted March 10, 2018 Posted March 10, 2018 would be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand swinging arm then weld and repair that one Quote
Mickly Posted March 10, 2018 Author Posted March 10, 2018 The ones I’ve looked at on evil bay also have some damage of some sort.I’ve dressed the chain adjuster with a fileHere it is next to the non damaged one.The damaged one is at the top.Took a while and reminded me of the punishment for digression as an apprentice - squaring a block of roughly cut steel with a file.Gonna ask the powder coating guy for advice on the gouge in the arm it’s self. fastbob Posted March 10, 2018 Posted March 10, 2018 Is the gouge going to be visible on the completed bike ? Won't whatever made the gouge still be hiding the mark upon reassembly ? Quote
Mickly Posted March 10, 2018 Author Posted March 10, 2018 Is the gouge going to be visible on the completed bike ? Won't whatever made the gouge still be hiding the mark upon reassembly ? I’ve got no idea how it got gougedAs I’m stripping it back to the bare bones it will stand out, and more importantly- I would know it was there ... OCD me ?Probably Mickly Quote
TimR Posted March 11, 2018 Posted March 11, 2018 would be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand swinging arm then weld and repair that one But you then have to add a swingarm bearing kit as you have no idea of its wear until you refit .At least with old arm you have an idea of its history and lifespan Quote
TimR Posted March 11, 2018 Posted March 11, 2018 Gouge i would say caused by a overlong bolt on a exhsust hanger or such Quote

Mickly Posted March 22, 2018 Author Posted March 22, 2018 Result- got the ally weld done for nowt - called at a local place on the off chance and met an old neighbour, not their normal thing but did it as s favour, wouldn’t even take a tenner for a beer - also gave me the name of a contact for any future work - what a great guy. Lots of work cleaning it up, but now ready to go to the blasters / craters Quote
