Honda SS125

Finally after 20 years of ownership and 18 since its been on the road,I decided to do something with the Honda.

So moved it out from under the bench and started to strip it.

Within an hour tank,seat,rear mudguard,exhausts and engine were out,can't believe how simple it is.

Plan to get the rest stripped out to get the bare frame and swingarm painted.

Jobs to do;

Source new exhausts.These are the worst bit as they are very rare and very expensive,looking at £500-1000 for a geniune pair.I will find something suitable to graft on maybe a pair of C50s.

New wheel rims.

Paint frame and swingarm

Paint forks.

Clean up engine and paint side cases

Replace clutch springs and plates.Clutch was slipping last time I rode it.

Replace brake shoes

Replace tyres

Got the rest of the frame stripped out tonight.

Considering some of its not been touched for 48 years everything came apart remarkably easily.

Honda quality I guess.

The frame has quite a bit of surface rust but nothing serious.

Need to find somewhere to shot blast it all now.

Did you get to have a look at the vintage scooters at Magpie Motorcycles while you were there ? They have some immaculately restored early Lambrettas but interestingly they also have some unrestored examples that are worth a lot more left exactly as they were found with only the mechanical bits refurbished.

No,I took the parts to his home as I don't think he was working yesterday.

Just checked out the Magpie website though,looks like a decent indy workshop.

I would probably have said much the same thing until I visited Magpie Motorcycles . If nothing else, I feel sure that you will be impressed by the standard of finish on their restorations . Just a thought, good luck with your project.

I collected all the parts on Tuesday evening,Phil had done a great job.

Shot blasted all of it and black powder coated the stand,footpeg bracket and rear torque arm.

Gave all the rest a couple of coats of etching primer the same night while it was still rust free and the weather was dry.

Can't believe the difference.

Took the rear dampers apart today using a modified pair of car spring clamps,worked a treat to release the clamping collets.

Rear dampers are completely shot ,no bump damping at all;no surprise really,they are 48 years old.

Did some more work on the Honda this morning.

Removed the engine side covers to paint.

The engine has a small centrifuge on the end of the crank to keep the oil clean.

Found a paint roller tray made an ideal wet and dry tray for flatting off the covers.

Removed and measured all the cover screws,going to order new as they are all rusty and or chewed up.

Took the clutch apart as last time I rode it,clutch was slipping badly,hope the springs are ok as they are unobtainable.

He has a daughter from a previous relationship.

So they are not related in anyway otherwise it would have been my daughters step daughters partner.

Or I could have said my eldest grandsons half sisters partner.

The above is strictly correct, my eldest grandson was an uncle at 3 years old, there are quite big age differences among some of my family.

Made a clutch cover gasket, New one is only available in a bottom end kit at around £30.

This one cost me £2 and an hour of time.

Went up into the loft and found the workshop manuals, found the clutch plates are ok on thickness but the springs are way below the minimum height and need replacing.

This is going to take a bit of sorting as they are discontinued, will need to measure them up and do some searching for similar from Honda's of that age

Few more parts arrived today,all courtesy of Ebay.

After a bit of Google searching I found some Royal Enfield clutch springs that are the right length,ID and number of coils.

Wire thickness is 0.2mm down so for £6 will give them a go.

2 spark plugs delivered for less than £3.

Set of replica side panel stickers for just over a fiver.

How much easier does the internet make restoring a bike.
