Beans Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 Every so often I think about trading in the cbf1000 and getting something, well, smaller, lighter and more suitable for a 5-mile-each-way commute. Realistically I'm not likely to be going off touring anytime soon, having anxiety means I'd rather not, so my trips tend to be days out and home (at weekends). And then I spend all my time on auto trader ogling things like the Yamaha fjr1300ae, or a BMW r1200rt. Guest Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 I've been doing the same thing. Looking for midweight cheap long distance commuter. Keep looking at the fjr and kwak 1400's Quote
Stu Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 Just been eyeing up the BMW k1300GT which lead to looking at the K1600GT more then on to the R1200RT! We can all dream! Quote

mikestrivens Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 Looking at other bikes is pretty normal. I do the same with cars and bikes Quote
Beans Posted January 13, 2019 Author Posted January 13, 2019 Well yes, Mike but always the bigger ones. Crazy cc thing. Them groms just don't appeal. Maybe I'm trying to make up for some inadequacy Perhaps it is because I've come later in life to motorcycling Quote
Martyn850 Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 I like big bikes and I can not lie...... Quote
fastbob Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 Get an ER5, I've had more fun riding and working on mine in the last two years than I've had in ages . After 30 years of big cc bikes this step down has been an absolute revelation to me . Many might hate me for saying it but you don't need massive speed and power to enjoy motorcycling . I've still got my 1100 but riding the ER has made the thought of parting with it so much easier. Now I'm set on getting a Harley ( eventually ) Quote
BIKERDAD Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 I think there might be some thing wrong with you as far as I know .. NO ONE does a 5 mile commute to work you must mean a 50mile commute as no biker ever goes in a direct route . If you are doing a direct route then i think you need to see a specialist most motorcycle show rooms have these specialist working for them they will help you and then they will give you the right medications ( a bike that don't going direct to work on ) you have to see what he recommends (size engine ) Once you take the medication you will be cured immediately.. .. Ps don't tell ppl you have this condition as non bikers will not understand as its 99% car drivers suffer this condition and bikers will be shocked at this condition as they don't understand how bad this condition is look at how miserable car drivers are .don't want a biker to suffer the same . Plz get help Quote
Gerontious Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 I like big bikes too... but its taking some getting used to going from a 40" seat height down to a 36" Dropping by 87cc and increasing both power and torque at the same time. Not to mention going up from a standardised 45mpg to 60+I had a K1200GT for a while... Got rid because i knew it would cost me my license, just a matter of time and a monetary lapse of concentration. When 100mph+ feels like 50. its just bound to go horribly wrong sooner or later. If I'm going to be riding at approaching that kind of speed I want to be aware of it. Not cocooned in a bubble of stillness.Im far more interested in torque these days than out and out BHP. A bike that likes to live in the twisties. (real ones) and can pull me effortlessly up a mountain side. Or venture down some random road from hell in Belgium without fear of a cracked frame or dented wheel rim.Had an 800cc bike for a while and I only got rid because it couldn't take proper sized panniers. Nice and rapid, but anodyne. The latest version though, the F800R is a cracker.. just add an AC Schnitzer exhaust. But this Africa Twin! Lordy, First bike Ive ever owned that makes me feel like Im breaking some law or other just by starting the engine!!Now just biding my time until I can justify a Termignoni and find my inner hooligan. xMachina Posted January 18, 2019 Posted January 18, 2019 I always like looking at shiny stuff I neither need nor can afford, it’s what keeps sane(ish)! Quote
exportmanuk Posted January 19, 2019 Posted January 19, 2019 There is nothing wrong with using a bigger bike to commute I use a R1200RT every day to go to work. At this time of year is 11 miles each way ( its dark in a morning and at night) but in the summer the ride home may be rather circuitous if I have the time Quote
Beans Posted January 21, 2019 Author Posted January 21, 2019 I've been living in a cave and meditating on the subject. I think it is because I can only have one bike for everything. Quote
