elizabethf Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Added heated grips to my bike but the glue was quite runny and some dropped onto the plastic panel on my tank Any ideas how to get it off? Not sure it painted black or not so not too sure about acetone. Will it come off with a few washes? Give up and buy a replacement panel? It’s bugging me. Quote
mikestrivens Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 well if you are resigned to a new panel then try acetone. If it works great, if not then get a new panel. Or just live with it and see what happens when you wash it. Quote
Bender Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Nail Polish remover, you have nothing to loose. Quote
Gerontious Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 blot with acetone until it softens. then blot with a clean dry cloth to remove. Quote
elizabethf Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 I was as careful as I could be with the acetone and it did dissolve some of it but now there's grey specs everywhere soooo Quote
elizabethf Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 Second question.... what is this bit called? Quote
Six30 Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Carbon wrap it , you’d have to do panel other side to match, you’d probably get a firm to do it for not much cash ,I had a couple of bits done on one of my old bikes . Quote
skyrider Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 have you tried going over it with hot water and a sponge Quote
elizabethf Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 have you tried going over it with hot water and a sponge yeah, that got rid of the thin splatters lower down but not the blob. Quote
skyrider Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 very carefully with a Stanley knife and then back on with the sponge Quote
fastbob Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 (edited) The problem here is that the glue has fallen on to a panel that has a raised pattern that is supposed to resemble cabon fibre. I don't think there's any solvent that's going to remove the glue without damaging the surface of the panel . So unfortunately it's a new or second hand panel OR install a switch for something in the same place . Here's one , sorry I haven't figured out how to post links with my new phone yet . mikestrivens Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 And the lesson you have learned from this episode is? Quote
skyrider Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 as it was mentioned earlier if you think the panel is already damaged you don't have a lot to loose so it might be worth a go at trying to get rid of the glue, and its a big shame seeing as you have only recently got the bike Quote
Kelbam Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Ive got superglue on one of my kitchen worktops, thats been there for ages. Resigned myself to having to get new worktops eventually as never been able to shift it and it annoys me every time i see itEven more annoying that I scratched right next to it with a stanley blade opening a packet of cheese because i couldn't be arsed to get the scissors Its almost like i never learn Quote
Slowlycatchymonkey Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 I’ve seen some footage (possibly on here) of black shoe polish reviving black plastic to look like new. Might be worth a go. Quote
skyrider Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 And the lesson you have learned from this episode is? cover the panel with a cloth before gluing Quote
elizabethf Posted March 17, 2019 Author Posted March 17, 2019 And the lesson you have learned from this episode is? Well I didn’t install them myself but didn’t want to flat out blame my fella as he was trying to be nice.... Quote

Guest Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Gotta be dozens of those bikes in various breakers. Have you tried them for a second-hand panel? Quote

Will look 100% better than the superglue victim it currently is. Quote
