Guest Richzx6r Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 If you were close by I'd have lent you my tool for spreading motorcycle caliper pistons, only way would be use a longish spanner between the pads but try not to damage the pad surfaces Quote
Bender Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Release reservoir cap cover, push pistons back in with g clampMake sure you don't pop one out completely Quote
gogs01 Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 First try pushing the pistons back with your fingers. You need to push both at the same time if you have opposing pistons. If you're lucky, they'll slide right back in. If they're a little stiff and you don't have the correct spreader, a suitably sized piece of wood will help lever them back in without causing any damage. Quote
potatobroxd Posted March 25, 2020 Author Posted March 25, 2020 I'm still a novice with diy maintenance, by the pistons do you guys mean the part i circled with yellow stains on? And i should remove the pads as well i believe? Quote
Bender Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Yup, remove pads and see if you can move them Quote
fullscreenaging Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Yes. Remove pads and push pistons back. Once you’ve put the wheel back on make sure you pump the brake lever to push the pads back onto the disc Quote
fastbob Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 I'm still a novice with diy maintenance, by the pistons do you guys mean the part i circled with yellow stains on? And i should remove the pads as well i believe? The part with the yellow stains ( Rust ) should be gleaming silver before you push it back in . One way to push the pistons back in is to stick the old pads back in and just widen the gap with a tyre lever or a big screwdriver . Dosen't matter if you damage the old ones . Quote
potatobroxd Posted March 26, 2020 Author Posted March 26, 2020 I managed to push back the pistons today but when i put everything back together the front brakes drag? I torqued everthing back together before pressing the brakes, did i do something wrong? Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 It's not unusual for discs to drag slightly when first replaced. So long as the wheel spins under moderate hand pressure it's ok. Obviously if it's really stiff to turn the brakes are binding. Quote
Bender Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 Could be piston sticking too, give it a ride, see if it improves. Quote
learningtofly Posted March 30, 2020 Posted March 30, 2020 Just to say... great forum for advice, etc. Quote
