my own strategy is to do the easy stuff myself and take the bike to the dealership for the difficult work thats beyond my skill levels. the savings I make will help off-set the high bills further down the line. if a good Independent appears on the radar then I'll consider that too. fortunately I can do this as in own the bike outright. I'm under no contract to use the dealership. one of my better decisions, buying the bike with a bank loan.

I understand going to the brand dealer within warranty, even then you risk to be told "I'm sorry (not really), that's not included in the warranty..."

I just go to a trustworthy wee garage, in my case Bob Scott bikes and likewise @Gerontious have him doing the hard bits.

This guy is always so busy that he welcomes me doing the "cheap" stuff and only go there for advice, which is great at, or for the bits I can't do.

It is a win-win situation

It was the pomposity that I got tired of in the end . I just wanted an MOT not the whole life story .

Ah, yes, see what you mean, l can put up with it for 20mins but can see how it grates.

Yep, I’ll do all that I can myself, the let a pro do the rest.

E’rrm, so when I get a moment I’ll do it myself- if I do, how do I get the service due spanner & overdue timer on the display  reset?

Take the bulbs out and write a note in the back of the manual .

I will be making a detailed description of exactly what I do along with the relevant receipts for any future owner.

I’m not sure that you can take the bulbs out of an LCD display but I like your thinking, equally sticking tape over them isn’t really an option.

I was being a tad tongue in cheek because I'd never actually heard of service interval warning lights .
