Car A is driving along behind car B, apparently heading towards the roundabout beside Asda in Blyth, England.  Car C pulls across in front of car B, possibly illegally, causing car B to brake sharply.  Car A also brakes, but not in time to avoid a collision with car B.  Car C does not stop, but cars A and B do.  Car A has a damaged bumper, and car B has scratched paintwork, and the driver of car B expects the driver of car A to pay for the repainting work, even though it is not clear that car A was at fault.

Does anyone have any advice for the driver of car A?

It will always be at B’s fault for running into the back of car A

You should always leave enough of a gap to be able to stop safely in

As I read it A ran into the back of B.

Whatever the letters, the car that ran into the back of other car is at fault. As said above, you always need to leave room to stop if the car in front has to brake unexpectedly.

A ran into the back of B.

B stopped to avoid a collision, A didn't stop in time, end of.

A should have left a bigger gap and anticipate the unexpected.

I just got a letter from County Court for a claim dating back to 2016 when I was involved in an incident on a very icy road where 4 cars were involved in a shunt. I was no. 3 of 4 and ran into back of car in front before being rear ended by one behind. Car 2 is trying to claim 7k off me for which he can piss up a rope. I was in a hired car and the 3rd party insurance from the hire company should have settled this ages ago. Waiting to see what happens and then will be taking legal advice and claiming costs if necessary.

But generally if you run into the back of another vehicle regardless of circumstances you are at fault.
