oldgrump Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Hi, Just wondered if any of you have a Ultrasonic bench cleaner. And if so what make and how good is it. And how reliable it's been. Just I have about 5 bikes with bloody carb problems and carb cleaners aren't working!!! So thinking about buying a unit, and wondered if anyone had previous brought one. Cheers Quote
husoi Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Search for a company that will do laser cleaning. Far more effective. Won't go as far as saying to buy a laser cleaner because cost is around 300k for a small one. There are some yt clips of people who made their own for a few 100s and construction isn't complicated. All depends on what power you want to have. 1 Quote
geofferz Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 I've seen people on YouTube use then to varying degrees of success if that's any use?! 1 Quote
Tinkicker Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 I have a small ultrasonic cleaner that I use mainly for cleaning watch movement parts, but I have also used it for smaller motorcycle parts like carbs. They are very very good but not infallible. Certainly magnitudes better than a bucket and brush. 2 Quote
Interference Fit Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 I have a very small one. There are three main factors to consider when ultrasonic cleaning. The least important in my experience is the size and power of the machine, they all do the job of creating micro surface cavitation and the power tends to go up in relation to the size of the unit and hence the size of the part to be cleaned. The next most important factor is temperature - a heated unit will far out perform a non-heated unit - hot dirt will soften and fall away more easily. And in my experience, by far the most important element is the fluid used - the stronger and more potent the cleaning agent the better, depending on the type of dirt you are trying to remove. My only other advice which sounds like won't be applicable in your situation is that ultrasonic cleaners are not great at removing grease, so a thorough soaking in a solvent where grease is present first will help. 5 Quote

S-Westerly Posted December 29, 2023 Posted December 29, 2023 Surely it depends on who is filling what? I'm not applying! 1 1 Quote

Bender Posted December 29, 2023 Posted December 29, 2023 Back on topic. I would love a laser cleaner, you can get smaller Chinese ones but they are still 10k, I fear that combined with the price of a divorce is a bit too prohibitive. 1 1 Quote
oldgrump Posted December 29, 2023 Author Posted December 29, 2023 Cheers for all the replies guys, think I'm just going to bite the bullet and grab a 9 litre Draper cleaner. And @Interference Fit, yes not really to clean the outsides, just the pilot side drilling's mainly, the VTR1000 is bad, been stood since 2009!! And really gummed up. The 2 other Honda's CB750F2 and CBR400 not to bad, but 750 could do with a deep clean. As for the Kawasaki Z650B1, why does someone buy a bike without it running, because the owner showed him a video of it running!!!! Only needs a battery sir!! YEA!! Anyway cheers for all the information 2 Quote
