Happens loads on track very successfully. technically it doesnt sense slip, it only reads wheel speed differences (slowing/stalling/stopping/rising/spiking) which in the basic form of tc it reacts to a set value as to if its sudden rises again or its vertically stopped....thats were its either just loose stones, sliding out or a high side which is why it was easy to be fooled and high/low side with early systems. but thats where better and more sophisticated systems like stability control (SC) setup works that out better to figure it out based on other components talking to engine torque values, steering/lean values, suspension. Combination of tyre with less grip than expected, a bit of a lean and even a relatively gentle tweak of the throttle the tyre could just slide out from underneath particularly if there were road markings or a damp road or gravel.
