onesea Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 Is there a legal limit to projections on a motorbike? I am considering making a rack to put my outboard on the bike. Thinking of mounting it vertically of the hangers on my Enfield. Something like this. There is a reason I ask, the local council are putting the annual parking charge from £220 odd pounds to £230 The previous year it went from £140 to £220, plus increased restrictions on use. Quote
husoi Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 You have the kerb weight and luggage max weight allowed. From memory, no object should be further back than number plate.Ax luggage weight is related to the size of engine also Unless you live in South Asia Quote
Throttled Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 There is no specific maximum width restriction for a motorbike, other than the universal maximum width of 2.55m. A trailer towed by a motorcycle cannot be wider than 1m, which is a good rule of thumb, as the most relevant law is about the safe carriage of items and nothing protruding so it poses a risk to other road users. Davidtav Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 I’m thinking of getting one of these electric outboards. And I think it would be a lot more manageable on a motorbike. But they are still quite pricey https://epropulsion.uk/products/elite Quote
husoi Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 Can't you make a deal with a local farmer and have the boat on his place for a cheap rent? Usually farmers have loads of space and never heard of one saying no to make a few quid Quote
Nick the wanderer Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 I don't think there are any specific restrictions that I can see for motorcycles. As long as your plate and lights are visible. For that outboard I'd be thinking of putting the motor on the pillion with the prop sticking straight out the back, on a rack maybe, it won't stick out any further than a metre so should be ok. That would be best for balance and strapping down I would think. How much does it weigh? Quote

The local yacht club has an outboard shed, membership £400 odd a year, plus storage charge and waiting list for space in shed. 3 hours ago, Davidtav said: I’m thinking of getting one of these electric outboards. Plus the harbour master won't allow solar arches on dinghies. FYI plan was one of these: https://www.electric-outboard.co.uk/product/haswing-protruar-2hp-electric-outboard-12v-with-digimax-controller/ Leaving lead acid batteries charging by large solar panel on arch. However in the next 12 months my life which is already in a tumble dryer looks like it's going west. So all logistics for boating are going to change. 1 1 Quote
S-Westerly Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 I'm guessing the weight of a decent small outboard must be close to 20kg? I'm guessing that would be a bit heavy to hang off the side of a bike and would unbalance it a bit. I'd be looking at trying to stow it on the pillion and the shaft pointing straight back. Quote

Capt Sisko Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 What about the dangerous load aspect. By that I don't mean the security of the load, I mean the sharp & pointy bits, you can't have these exposed. You also run the real probability of PC Keen taking an intrest in your load. Traffic Police Keen ought to know the law and leave you alone as long as everything looks legal, but local Keen are going to see it as potential good stop to get their numbers up for the day. Quote

I had thought about this only sticky out bit will be propeller at a low height and inside line of handlebars and within the length of bike... It's plastic. Quote
S-Westerly Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 Our Yamaha outboard had a nifty bag to carry it in which would protect any pointy bits. 2 Quote
