what is the cheapest a2 bike to insure?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I'm 19 and got my a2 license a couple months after my cbt. I also dont drive a car and for cb 400cc bikes im getting quoted 2.5k as a minimum and 5k as an average which is retarded

I said I keep the bike in a garage put all the safety lock features ect does anyone have recommendations for bikes that would be cheaper to insure? Or do i just give up on trying to jump straight into getting a bigger bike and get a 125 instead

Crazy prices.

Not sure what the answer is, maybe a 125 for a year to build up some no claims.

ong that 5k wasn't even the worst a lot of quotes were 9k looks like I'll have to stick to 125 for a while ☹️

This was the subject of some debate on a recent video. A few people have found a way to get cheaper insurance. Watch from 14 minutes in.

If you go for something retro like an old XT600, DR650 something like that. I bet it would be significantly cheaper.

Very subjective question really, as it always is when it comes to insurance ...... Way too many variables, that differ from person to person to enable any sort of quality advice to be given.

Your age and lack of no claims are the problem. Where you live may be a factor too!

Maybe get a cheap 125 to get that first years NCB?(as long as you don't make a claim)

Everyone's first year riding a bike is expensive for insurance. It will come down a lot once you have a whole year behind you. Either you can ride a 125 for a year and sell it on a year later or suck it up, if you can afford to.

As said, insurance depends a lot on age, where you live, and a bit on your job and stuff like that. Most of that you can't do much about. But it does also depend on bike, or more precisely on the insurance group the insurer puts your bike into. Not all insurers group bikes the same way, but here's one list I found on bikerated. I've sorted it by insurance group: each time you go from one group to a higher one, the insurance goes up. So start at the top of the list and go down until you find a bike you think you'd like ride, and run a quote on it. It might help you find one that works for you.

Thanks Bonio.

Even with that list as a guide to base something on, it’s just that , the insurance have their own numbers and rules to as and when it’s fitting to them.

To be honest if you’re young and new to road craft, a 125 is still more than enough to kill you or anyone else double quick time.

you say it’s retarded but its not, and its not biased towards you, your a huge risk to them and everyone else for many reasons…

sounds stupid but it MIGHT still be cheaper long run if you can avoid claiming and build ncb. How much is a 125, insurance, fuel, tax and service it needs etc? How long will you keep the bike? = ncb and older to the insurance, If you then look at the difference of what you will loose when you want to swap and how much you’ll need to put more money into the next bike? then how much is the insurance and running cost etc difference to that one? then how much ncb will make a difference at what point.

Maybe it was said before. Obviously I'm not that crazy to go reading everything 🤨

Lower power and lower cc will be the better option regarding the bike.

Loads of fairings will also make the insurance more expensive.

But that isn't the largest factor in the extortionate premiums you will find.

Your age

For how long you had your license

Address

Where the bike is kept overnight and during the day

Use of the bike commuting and parking on the road at work will be even worse

Age of the bike

Your profession

And likely some more that I haven't mention.

Posted

...Value of the bike

Number of miles ridden per year

Business use

How long you've had the bike

Pillion coverage

Other riders insured on the bike

Strangely, not whether you're male or female, since a recent(ish) change in the law.

Be careful of what you say you do and what you actually do. Insurance companies have been known to ask for 'proof of' i.e. a photo of your garage or security and they don't take kindly to being lied to.

Saying you also use a specific type of lock (which got you a discount) can also lead to problems when it comes to a theft claim if can't show you used it. From their point of view, you said I use an ABC123 Supertuff Lock so they reduced your premioum because it's going to make life harder for the scrotes to steal. If the T&Cs said you have to use the security you said you were (or a reasonable equivalent) and you can't prove it, they're entitled to reduce your pay out in the event of a theft claim.

Call me a cycnical old git if you like, but I've had 45yrs worth of dealings with insurance companies and if they can wriggle or squirm their way out of paying, they will.

Yeah unfortunately I'm 19 only just got my license and live in a sketchy area so the odds are not in my favour.. I'm also a medical student staying at home idk how much that would impact the insurance though. Is there a major difference between selecting social use/ social and commuting?

Try messing around in CompareTheMarket - I think you'll find it's an extra 20% or so from memory, but a higher annual mileage will also affect it.

From their point of view, you said I use an ABC123 Supertuff Lock so they reduce your premioum becaise it's going to make life harder for the scrotes to steal. If the T&Cs said you have to use the security you said you were (or a reasonable equivalent) and you can't prove it, they're entitled to reduce your pay out in the event of a theft claim.

Call me a cycnical old git if you like, but I've have 45yrs worth of dealings with insurance companies and if they can wriggle or squirm their way out of paying, they will.

thanks for the advice! will defo keep that in the mind for now I was just trying to see what I could do to get the insurance lower then 2k😭

Yes. If you're ever going to ride to your place of work or study - even if only occasionally - you must choose social and commuting. You don't want to be tarred with insurance fraud; it's almost impossible to get insurance again, ever.

In terms of money, commuting is a bit extra, like 10% or so I think.

As a brand new biker (or indeed driver of any kind) I managed to get insurance (fully comp including breakdown and leathers cover) for just shy of £600 a year (with Bennetts through that Meerkat place).  I have no doubt that my age (43) my status (homeowner and retired) the type of bike (2006 Honda CG125) and the security precautions I have taken (perhaps overkill) have served to bring the policy down to, what I feel, is a rather good price considering I am a brand new driver with 0 ncd etc.

While you can't do much about your age or status as others have mentioned you can get a 125 for a bit, get cheaper insurance as a result, and (hopefully) build up that no claims discount.

Just as a matter of interest, I was 19 for much of 1981 and had a Red & White RD400E. They poduced an alleged 44bhp / 165kg (although Japanese ponies were renowned for having short legs back then and the weight was usually quoted as a dry weight), nonetheless it's close enough to be what would pass as an A2 compliant bike nowadays. I can't remember exactly what I paid for insurance back then, but a well over a hundred pounds springs to mind (and that would have been TPF&T). Let's call it £150.

If you put 1981 & £150 in the the Bank of England Inflation Calculator it comes out at the equivalent of £562 in 2024. So yep, insurance has gone up.

Untick the 'with pillion' box if you had. They charge you more for this because should there be an accident and the pillion is injured they can claim for compensation from your insurer.

As a side note, I've never seen this option on car insurance regarding taking passangers or not. Is this another case of us bikers being discriminated?

It's the case that the car passenger is far more protected than on a bike.

Obviously insurance love risk so they can charge you 10 times more

Have you tried an older (cheaper) bike third party fire and theft? Or upping the excess to the max on a fully comp policy?

Just be careful with the upping the excess trick in a dodgy area…. You’ll need to pay that out to the insurance in an event of a claim, be paying more for the excess than the insurance for that and a few years worth coming for short returns.

You might just have to bite the bullet at some point anyway.

yeah more tick boxes to charge more no matter if you select them or not. My thought is if it has a seat for a human to sit on it, it should be assumed the vehicle will/could be used regardless as it’s not any different -otherwise they’ll be asking how often do u have 1, 2,3,4 or more passengers in your vehicle? How old will they be? What diets or lifestyle are they? And if they go even more daft you have a claim with 4 people in yet you only said 2 or 3 they would like void your insurance….its the future vision of insurance.

Trying to be legal and doing everything by the book is commendable 👍

Meanwhile, if you wear black clothes, a balaclava, no helmet and ride a stolen bike, you can go where you want and ignore red lights etc

Something seriously wrong in the UK 🙁

Ensure that you have commuting on your insurance. Not having it and getting stopped invalidates your insurance. That is six points on your licence, which means, if you haven't had your licence for two years, you go back to a provisional, and you have to start all over again. Also, be careful of comparison sites if you opt to pay monthly. I was trying to get car insurance for my niece. Even though we put commuting on the form, the quotes kept coming back without it. Only by paying annually with Admiral did we get commuting coverage.
