How long is a day?

  1. 1. If your 10 hour shift finishes on the a Wednesday morning at 0700 and your next 10 hour shift starts at 0600 on Sunday morning how many days off is this?

Because you might be on the shift you get the hour off for free next year.

Is this some HR corporate power trip bullshite - the next level major evil to American corporate or British government greedy fook heads to screw over the gullible or weak?

if ain’t on straight days your being fooked over, if you work any lates or nights for less than more than double the difference your being fooked over, if your working weekends for less than triple or quadruple your being fooked over and any other inbetween or special days your being fooked over or have no British standards or morals.


thats my view, you may have different and I won’t say owt.

4 as your working "day" is the day you start work not the day you finish

However is a day not meant to be 24 hours long?

 

I have fought them over this afew years back,  we would finish at 0630, then start again at 0600 the next day.

 

They called and classed the 23.5 hour in the middle as a day off.

We have one day off a week which is classed as "24 hours undisturbed".

 

I don't think I've had that in the past 40 years. When you live on the job and are working in your garage people wander up the drive saying, "I know it's your day off but...."

We have been challenged at work with it many times and the reply they get is 

 

If you work an early on Monday finishing at 11am then work a late on the Tuesday starting at 1400 shall we class that as a day off? 

 

They quickly say no when it's turned around like that

That's one issue we don't have. If you're on board you're working. As long as you get a mandated minimum 10 hours rest in 24 of which 6 must be continuous and no less than 77 hours off duty per week. For every day on board I earn a day off although don't always get all my leave I can then cash in the days I didn't get at home or keep them as leave.

Work at other depots was really slow, I was usually really busy.  One of my bosses decided it would be a good idea to start flexi-time. If the depot was quiet you would get told you had half or a full day off, midweek,( not your choice), but you may have to work a Saturday at straight time to make up the 40 hours before you went on to time and a half. When I was told, I said great, I'm really busy, on a good week I can have 40 chargeable hours in by Wednesday night, I can take the rest of the week off!!!   Flexi-time was never mentioned again.

That's the thing with our drivers they have a minimum of 11 hours off between shifts and work 4 or 5 days a week depending on the rota they are on. 

 

If they work overtime the maximum they can work is 13 days then it's 24 hours off on the 14th day

However how often do you stretch the shifts out so the 5 shifts have a minimum of 14 and up 24 hours between them.

 

Sometimes they treat you so you get as little as 11, so your body clock has to go forward and backwards in a run of 5 shifts.

 

It's a 5 day rota where no 2 shifts are at the same time. Frequently with meal breaks that are in the latter 1/4 of the shift or not at all. Overruns at the end of shift frequently,  it's not uncommon to get an hour or 2 occasionally 3.

 

Just been checking my next run of shifts, they have "requested" I move my 12-2200 to a 2030 start.  The next day being the start of annual leave...

 

The problem is if I don't agree they will come up with some secondary plan that will be worse 🤨

 

Is it a wonder people are reducing there hours or leaving...

Our drivers never work less than a minum of 11 hours between shifts on 5 day and never more than 7 days in a row unless they choose to do overtime 

 

They have 3 weeks notice if anything has to change and can easily swap with other drivers if they want to

One place I worked at bought in flexi time. You had to work the core hours but as long as you got in the require hours in the month all was good. The downside was we now had to “clock in” with a card. However your in time started as soon as you clocked in and stopped when you clocked out.

As I always got in approx 15 minutes early (to miss traffic) without changing my work pattern I now accrued at least an additional 15 minutes paid time each day. 

this all added up to 6 additional days off each year and early finish every Friday and more paid overtime. 👍
