Is this grease (Mobil 33 Aviation) suitable for Motorcycle chains?

Hi all,

Not a pro at mechanics so thought i'd inquire with you lot;

I work within a stores department for an Aviation firm, there is some Mobil 33 grease being chucked out and i wondered weather it would be any good for use on my motorcycle?

Worth a try!!

Don't throw it out, try some on the chain and see if it doesn't all fling off.

I would be more inclined to use an oil rather then grease on a chain

oil will get right in to all the links

and also grease will pick up all the road grime and grit and turn in to a nice grinding paste

I guess you both have a point about dirt clinging to it, im wondering weather PTFE spray would be better? For both getting into the links and also not allowing dirt to not stick as easily?

If neither are any good, i'll just buy some more Wurth or similar from the shop, just thought it was worth a go as it was being chucked

Never throw grease away. I wouldn't use it on a chain, but I do like applying it to the underside of my old Japanese cars with a big paintbrush. It's the only thing that stops them turning into rust buckets.

I think my chain lube is PTFE, which works ok.....

Joys of working in Aviation Stores. The amount of SLE POL that simply gets discarded is crazy! I've got a huge box of Solvent, Aeroshell Greases, paint and sealant. Plus some more specialised items for water and rust inhibiting etc.

Not sure I'd want to use Grease on my chain when a can of proper chain lube is so cheap!

Many people use white lithium based lube for chains. As said above it might attract too much dirt but if you clean your chain regularly and it doesn't fling off, I reckon it will be fine.

I would be careful using it on an O ring chain. Some greases contain additives that can damage the material that the O rings are made off.

There is some data on the link about "nitrile" etc that may mean it si suitable but you need ot know what material is used for Chain O rings then find out of the grease is suitable for that material.

In general it appears to have a good specification for use as a chain grease (resistant to water wash out etc).
