I believe BMW units are easier and cheaper to refurb now as other companies can do it. Use my bike for everything so the ability to change suspension at the touch of a screen saves a load of time and hassle. Changing from touring to gravel mode in the move is handy too on little country lanes

    This is true

There is plenty of places out there now able to refurb or even replace with an aftermarket unit for a lot less and have better results too

Changing the suspension on the fly is a novelty I would want on any bike I have now

Oddly enough the electronic suspension is a massive Nono for me… I tend to hang on to bikes for a few years and these things make upgrading stupendously expensive.

Fortunately technology moves on as does peoples knowledge and ability to make, rebuild and replicate this "expensive" suspension

Which results in companies out there able to now fully refurbish or replace these units at a very reasonable cost

A rebuild for the suspension on mine is no more than a rebuild on a none ESA unit and a replacement doesn't cost much more than an aftermarket unit without ESA

A good point. So the search continues…

Its one of the main thins I look at as I have a wife that packs everything!!

The largest luggage I found was always on a BMW or the triumph trophy but they stopped making that!

The GS was a no go as the wife struggled to get on it  so it made it a toss up between the RT or the K1600 the RT one as it was a better bike for the type of riding I do

Personally I think most panniers are made for one person

I’ve developed a strong antipathy towards high level exhausts due to their intrusion into the luggage space.

    Yup I get that.......

But! the NT1100 panier sizes are  33L left and 32L right the GS is 36L Right 44L Left

Looking at pictures of the NT the panniers do look tiny

  5. @Grumpy Old Git is this you volunteering to organise something? :D

I was going to look to see if I could organise something but I have just been too busy with work at the min! a change in occupation resulted in lots of training courses etc

My plan was to try and just find a place with camping and a B&B and just have some sort of meet up to get things going again and hopefully allow @rennie & @Susieque to enjoy themselves too instead of all the stress of the music etc! they are getting old now you know

My answer is it depends what current the stator kicks out.

Standard solution on a Trophy is to fit voltmeter. Although that's more to check battery has the kick to start without knackering the sprag clutch.

My check would be put volt meter across battery. See what voltage you get:

    1) engine off, 12.4 ish

    2) engine running without extra, 14 plus I would expect

    3) engine running with all load on max, flat phone, flat battery pack, heated grips 100%, sat nav, full beam, running lights etc

    • I would like 13+volts under load
    • However if voltage at 1 is less than at 3 all is good.
    • If you need to give her some Revs up to get a higher voltage then at idle your not charging.
    • If voltage is dropping fast at idle  you have an issue.

You can then play with the loads and see what had biggest effect.

One caution with USB charging some connections do not supply the amps that modern devices like.  This results in shower than expected charging.  My battery pack is guilty in this department.

I try to find accommodation I can charge it overnight. Some campsites or other campers are happy to do this for you.

Unfortunately it's not as easy as that!

It's not about the volts it's actually all about the amps that the charging system kicks out

You can have the right voltage but not the amperage to keep the battery charged

Heated grips sat navs and USB chargers are the most common fitted items and I would be shocked I anything larger than a 125 struggled with these fitted

There is scooters running around with these fitted with no issues

  7. It's becoming a bit of a tradition is this post now

So now the fat man has een what's your best and worst presents?

Best for me has to be the wunderlich brake and clutch levers 😎

Worst has to be the amount of chocolate I have received! I'm going to be rolling in to the new year
