I generally like Christmas but I wish it didn't start so early. It does seem to take the shine off, especially as it's only halloween tomorrow and bonfire night next week. I suppose I'm lucky in that I get the whole Christmas period off though

It's not a grammar thread either. I wouldn't say abject failure - the examples you give have been brought to the brink of extinction because of hunting, not failure to thrive as a species. If the rumour-mongerers didn't insist on telling everyone that powdered rhino horn made men virile, extra-tempting, or downright irresistible then there'd be a lot more of them around. Oh, and ornamental gorilla-mitts as ashtrays?! I don't think other species are less successful because they've not developed the gift of self-awareness or conscious thought either. Many people lack self-awareness and it doesn't seem to have stopped them just yet...more's the pity.

Just having a peruse of the BBC website and there's a whatsit on there where you can calculate where you are in the grand scheme of things. Turns out, I'm the 78,999,411,771st person to have lived since history began. When I was born I was the 4,425,942,521st person in the world. Out of interest, I entered my grandad's birthday, he was born in 1913. When he was born there were less than 2 billion people on the planet (still quite a lot admittedly - more than you'd want at a barbecue) and now there are 7 billion. A growth of 5 billion people in just less than 100 years, a 250% increase (if my maths is correct - it was never my strong point). No wonder we're running out of fuel...

The phrase "quiet enjoyment" sprang to mind and I did a quick google search. There's nothing to say that they can't make periodic inspections, but snooping through the windows seems a bit sneaky. As for the viewings, as I understand it they're required to give 24 hours notice and you have the right to refuse. They'd be in breach of quiet enjoyment otherwise.
