What classic moped?
Gerontious replied to Rodders's topic in Old Motorbikes, Projects and Restorations
you cant get more in the way of classic 50cc scooter 'kudos' than something like the 50 Super Cub. been around since the mid 60s. Not the sexiest bike in the world.. but ideal i would have thought given the demands you're placing. cheap and cheerful and with plenty of parts.. these things sold in the 100s of 1000s and turn up all the time at reasonable prices and in reasonable condition. -
Best way to lubricate my ignition barrel??
Gerontious replied to Foxy Stoat seeks Pig's topic in Pitstop
Ive been using WD40 for this for donkeys years.. to flush out any water/muck and then lightly lubricate. maybe twice a year... beginning and end of winter. -
Have a day off from being a tightwad. Get a Motobatt. Advanced Glass mat Battery. (AGM) I think you want an MBTX9U

Riders around Walsall/Sutton Coldfield?
Gerontious replied to SidG's topic in Midlands & Lincs ride outs and meets
Not a huge distance... from Walsall. (my old home town by the way) Cannock Chase and the north staffs moors. So... thinking north of the A5... south of the A50.... place Abbots Bromley at the imaginary centre of this region and explore. -
No dimmer on my spots... I just have them aimed to comply with the requirements of the MOT... This is their main purpose to supplement the dip... Giving me a far greater spread of light. And as a side effect protect me from the attention of the polizei if my main light were to go pop unnoticed. They do make me much more visible to oncoming traffic, though not to a certain German who pulled out into my path on the B500 and ruined the whole day when I did €5000 worth of damage to his car. Extra lights are useful... But they're not a panacea. For £200 I would expect CREE LEDs... its odd that DENALI do not give a brand name for the LEDs they use.

MOD1 MOD2 ON MY OWN BIKE
Gerontious replied to a topic in CBT, Test and Advanced Training Information
Interesting find. But it's a shame you didn't actually read to the end of the first sentence!! Now, just pause for a moment and think about what that actually means. -

Personally.. my strategy would be a 20L waterproof rucksack carried on the pillion seat and held in place with a cargo net. I would use the cargo net if carrying anything hard/solid or pointy. and wear it if carrying something soft - like clothes. Cargo net can either be left on the bike or removed in seconds and popped into the bag.

Looks very much like its a Vietnamese import and as such finding (and translating) an owners manual has proved impossible for this particular family of bikes. Plenty of owners manual to download.. but not for these. They are still in production though (since 2003) mainly in the Philipines, Malay and Indonesian markets so... your best bet for an answer is to go to a Yamaha Dealership.. maybe they can find out for you. Im thinking its probably something to do with the engine management. (next to the fuel indicator - but away from the turn signals and high beam) Maybe there has been a UK scooter in recent years with a similar layout.

There were two adults in that car. Two 24yr old men. What do you think they were doing? Not acting as the only adults in the car - thats for sure. I would feel a little less charitable towards the 15yr old driver had he taken out some innocent bystander.. but as it happens it was a stolen car being driven under the supervision of two adult men. Thrown from the car, so it seems reasonable that none of them were wearing the seat belts.. Is there any suggestion that anyone in that car was an unwilling participant? Doesn't seems so as that would be a big deal in the news article.

Ive always had panniers on my bikes.. and never, not once have I been asked who made them.. or if the had been homologised. basic rule of thumb.. be damn sure they are securely fitted to the bike and there is zero chance of them coming off and thereby causing another road user to have an accident. aside from that.. my bet is there is zero problem with designing your own. Do companies like GIVI go through the rigamrole of having their panniers homologised for every make and model of bike? and what of non specific panniers... that fit a multitude of bikes. how is it even possible to homologise them? The idea is just a smidge ludicrous.

I know of a chap who makes (or used to make) bespoke Aluminium panniers for the BMW GS.. might be an idea sending him an email as he should know the answer. [email protected]

Is this jacket ok?
Gerontious replied to Impy2's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
Weise is essentially an own brand of the import/wholesale part of the company that owns Fowlers in Bristol. although that particular jacket is no longer in production its worth bearing in mind that all their gear comes with a 2 year warranty. so keep the receipt. The gear is designed here in the UK and manufactured in the far east. Ive only owned gloves made by them and they're alright. -
Of course there is always the train... but this is just a smidge more complicated and would mean a ride into central Paris. the advantage is that you can collect your bike when you want and its only a 28 mile ride to San Sebastian. so.. the bike would go to Paris and on an overnight train to Biarritz.. and you would travel on the TGV during the day. probably looking at £150 for that all-in. and perhaps a room in paris for the night... on top. https://www.railtravelshop.com/motorail/france/paris-biarritz Over the years ive talked to all sorts of people.. all bikers who have used the train and they all thought it was great. In recent years its changed.. especially in france. but its still a viable way to travel if you dont want to ride from north to south. not all that long ago the train would start from calais.. but now they all start from Paris. Gare de Bercy https://goo.gl/maps/7wUcUp1HGNy So.. you would ride down to Dover or the tunnel.. cross to france then a 3 hour ride to Paris. hand the bike over at the rail station. spend the night in paris then in the morning get the super fast train to Biarritz.. where your bike will be waiting for you then its a very short ride to San Sebastian.

I know you said a ferry was out of the question.. but have you done your sums? Using the Economie and as cheap as possible.... so that will mean kipping in a seat. works out at £199. based on one adult plus motorcycle travelling on Tuesday July 10th details as per below. Outbound Route: Portsmouth to Santander Departure: Tue 10 Jul 2018 17:15 Arrival: Wed 11 Jul 2018 18:15 Vessel: PONT AVEN How are you travelling? Outbound 1 Motorcycle(s) Passenger details Outbound 1 Adults On board accommodation Outbound 1 x Reserved Lounge Seat Price 40.00 GBP Deposit 159.00 GBP Balance So.. you arrive in a day with an overnight on the boat.... that would give you what? 5 or 6 days for a very leisurely and rather pleasant return journey home. compare this £199 with the costs of the ride down.. ferry/tunnel to France. best part of 700 miles at a minimum in petrol. plus tolls. plus 2/3 nights accommodation. and all meals. suddenly £200 doesn't seem so expensive.. Ferry is to Santander.. which is about 130 miles from San Seb. personally... i would sit down and do the sums... and weigh it all up. a bit more if you want to go in august.. then it works out at £221

Lost all confidence in riding..... (test now passed)
Gerontious replied to BigHeavy1095's topic in Motorbike Chat
On a slightly more positive note. My suggestion is in 3 parts 1. start saving 2. suss out a different riding school. 3. grab the bull by the horns and go for the A2 license. Im not a huge fan of the A2... but in your case i really think you should go for it and move beyond a 125cc bike. -

Sticker bomb helmets ?

So... Possibly a €135 fine... But in reality.... Extremely unlikely. I wouldn't bother.
