very unlikely. I doubt that you have enough time but my strategy would be to replace the Tamiya connector with a DIN socket.. and that will open up a whole raft of possibilites. DIN is far more widely supported than Tamiya. Once you have that then it becomes a lot easier.. I would use a Din plug with a USB female socket, this will sort out the voltage.. then just get a USB to Lightning cable of the appropriate length. (Both easily sourced from eBay) My bike has a DIN.. and so it only cost me a few quid to sort out the power for my Ipad when I went camping to Italy a few years back. USB/DIN plug.. and then the cable.

Lower than what? you seem to be suggesting sub 500Ma. is that right?

Gel are better as they are sealed and maintenance free.. lead/acid batteries can occasionally need topping up. also they are a little less good in winter and if its really cold.. well below zero, there is a small chance that they could burst. Gel are better than Lead acid. AGM batteries are best of all... the most commonly recommended being from the Motobatt brand. They arrive fully charged and ready to fit.. they also weigh less. And produce more power for better cold starts. There is no such thing as a charger for lead/acid that wont work just the same on a Gel.. or an AGM. the technology in all 3 is the exact same.. just the materials are different.. and its this difference that makes for improvements as you move through the 3 types. A Gel battery is just a lead/acid with a thickener.. thats sealed in... with special vents that allow gasses to escape. An AGM is the same.. though the Gel is held in mats of fibreglass and sandwiched between these are the lead plates.. because the lead plates cannot move they can be made from super soft pure lead that are considerably thinner.. and its this that makes the battery 'stronger'. (and a little lighter)

What do you use for navigation?
Gerontious replied to a topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
I use a 9 year old Garmin Zumo.. it works perfectly and is still fully supported by Garmin with software and map updates plus back to base (Southampton) repairs, if necessary. I see nothing to be gained by replacing it. i'll probably be keeping it until it either bricks... or Garmin render it obsolete by no longer offering map updates. despite the gadgets age.. it never ceases to amaze me how much these things sell for.. and how quickly. -
If you pass your test.. buy a bike with at least some luggage capacity.. and this idea of yours doesn't happen. send me a message next spring.

If you make stuff that can fit in a shipping container.... its not robots you have to worry about, its China.

Re: Nice easy one. What adhesive to use for hazard button

If nothing has snapped.. was it already glued in place. is there any residue? -
My bike has two hoses and doesn't have a coolant expansion tank.. or any coolant for that matter, The airbox on my bike has a plugged hole in its base.. which is there for excess oil if the engine was ever overfilled. (and no hose) 1 is for the drain holes from the 'bowl' under the petrol cap. the 2nd is from the battery,, or would be if I didn't have a sealed AGM. easy to differentiate which is which.. the one smells of petrol. My 800 had a 3rd hose.. called an 'exhaust steam hose' that came from the coolant expansion tank. coolant cant spill from that unless the expansion tank was holed. And if it were to overflow.. then that would mean I had significantly overfilled.. and ignored the 'fill' line
-
Absolutely nothing to do with either. The fluid that escaped was almost certainly petrol.. when a bike goes over its much safer for the fuel to escape via the hose. (which is its easiest route) than to leak out of the petrol cap.
-
overflows.. normally.. from the petrol tank cap. to allow rainwater to flow away before it can overflow into the fuel or if you overfill.. it allows excess petrol to drip safely to the ground or air to escape.. when its hot weather and the fuel expands... and from the battery.. to allow for expansion or gasses to escape.. either way.. they are a safety feature of sorts.

Amount of oil needed to service an AJS JS125-E ECO 1
Gerontious replied to Hughmoz's topic in Pitstop
1 litre The bike is a clone of the Sinnis JS125 and putoline put these details on their website. 1.2 Litres dry fill 1. litre service fill I would treat that purely as a guide.. and rely on the dipstick for the actual fill line. -
videos of last years "> "> The second video implies its busy.

Campsite east anglia/east Midlands region needed
Gerontious replied to NeilM's topic in General Chat
Teenagers? How about a little further west.. near Alton Towers, perhaps http://www.lmtp.co.uk. bus from the site. from there its a fairly fast route to the A50 and on to the M1 and south to Silverstone. Or perhaps a site close to Twycross.. which is further south and closer to the area you want. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=5989 -
Google (images) is your friend. you can view examples of the camera attached to the top of the helmet, above or below the visor on either side or the chin bar. http://tinyurl.com/y9dcw62p A little further digging should reveal if the attachments were included in the box.. or bought separately as accessories.

Its arrived,, and as expected. though I did open it with some trepidation. The certificate is "Perfect". Police records of CONVICTION,CAUTIONS, REPRIMANDS AND WARNINGS - NONE RECORDED. DBS Adults' Barred list information. - NONE RECORDED. Other relevant information disclosed at the Chief Police Officer(s) discretion. - NONE RECORDED. DBS Children's barred list information - Not Requested. Information from the list held under section 142 of the Education Act 2002 - Not Requested. So.. thats that hurdle dealt with and (as soon as the rain stops) I'll pop over to the head office and deliver it to the HR person. And hopefully get answers as to how things are progressing and what happens next. Just as aside.. It would have been nice if they had requested those last two.. relevant to Children. even though this particular job doesn't involve them.

Only Holiday this year is on the bike. 8 of us are heading for the German Eifel (and Luxembourg) in early September... staying at a super cheap and wildly popular (amongst us) hotel close to the Luxembourg border, Half board. With daily rides across the region.. hopefully one day crossing the Rhine (ferry) for lunch at Frankensteins castle. Not to mention a lap of the Nurburgring. And a full day in the glorious and empty north end of Luxembourg. Our 5th time and its always a joy doing what various commitments wont allow here... riding every day for the pure pleasure of the ride. With the added attraction of daily doses of Kaffee und Kuchen. Plus ending the day with a long cool beer (or 6)

Type of security
Gerontious replied to saundersr2810's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
I would opt for an alarmed Disc Lock.. that will go off if the bike is tampered with and so you'll know straight away.. assuming you can hear it. But you have to be aware that if the bike is spotted by thieves of the professional type.. and its on their list. Unless the bike is chained securely to something that cannot be moved.. they can have the bike loaded into a van is seconds. so a simple chain is rather less useful than an alarmed disc lock. At least you have some chance of hearing it go off. If I were you.. I would make maximum use of the Garage.. use it every time, even if its less than convenient. -
Type of security
Gerontious replied to saundersr2810's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
Where is it parked over night.. is it out of sight? and where are you likely to be parking it during the day? My view on security is.. if the thieves don't know where it is then they wont be stealing it. If they do know where it is then you have to make extra efforts to defeat them. put them off because its going to be a hassle to take. but keeping it out of sight.. especially of passing traffic is your greatest defence against theft. If you have a garage.. always use it,, never leave it on your driveway. if its parked behind a gate... always put it there straight after a ride. don't put it off. If its normally covered.. cover it immediately. -
Not sure what to make of this.. but, I was told that the enhanced Disclosure and Barring service check would take weeks.. up to 4. I just checked online and mine was completed in 2 days has been printed and despatched. I'm assuming this will arrive through the letterbox Tuesday on. So.. all being well I should get a start date fairly soon

I really have little idea what this thread is about... But.. its had an odd effect.. for some reason I get "The Lumberjack Song" playing on a loop in my mind.. with just a few words changed. (just a few) -
old Ariel motorbike - Model/year?
Gerontious replied to serendipity09's topic in Old Motorbikes, Projects and Restorations
It looks like an early 50s VB 600.. but, I think I can make out what should be on the side.. though it looks more like V5. (must be VB) it has a lot in common with this 1953 bike.. not identical.. but along the same lines. If it is a VB they were made from 1947 to 1953 They were really quite classy bikes in their time... expensive. Today.. fully restored anywhere between £5000 - £8000 -
Pannier Question !
Gerontious replied to AlexCrosbie's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
Why "not so good"? in an emergency stop the pillion will be thrown forward.. so the fact there is a top case makes no difference. for me the fact its there is mainly about sharp acceleration for that extra feeling of security. no danger of falling.. or sliding backwards, and for those longer journeys its great to have something to lean back against. Exactly, being thrown forward is not so good . If the passenger is holding a grab rail rather than relaxing against a comfy back rest then this is less likely to happen. The pillion can sit back and relax against the top case while holding the grab rails. so.. cake and eat it. -
