Helmet bag
Gerontious replied to Slowlycatchymonkey's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
get the sewing machine out.. blow all that accumulated dust off it and make your own... with an old sheet. (or similar) Or.. be lazy and buy one.. for example: http://tinyurl.com/ycubw4l5 or have a look on ebay. -
Its for non regulated staff.. and covers a lot of what people on the (regulated) medical side learn during their training. Its nationally recognised. covers things like duty of care. privacy and dignity, safeguarding adults (and/or Children) mental health, dementia and learning disabilities.. and so on. So, if i decided i wanted a change... perhaps working with Downs... it proves that i know all the basics to start immediately with only minor additional training for their specific needs. A fair few of those at the induction are getting their certificate as parts of a "Hands-on" work experience during the summer holidays.. of the 15.. at least 4 that I know of are at Uni doing various degrees and this is viewed as a very important part of what will eventually be their CV.

An update. completed the induction week over the past 5 days.. so much to get to grips with, especially the legislation and its implications which isn't as straightforward as I, rather naively. thought it might have been. Wednesday was my first "shadow shift' where I finally found out the precise location of the place Im going to be based at (1.4 miles from my front door) and met the 3 guys who are being supported, 3 guys.. with 3 very different sets of issues. But, not bad at all.. I think Ive really fallen on my feet with these 3. They have full mobility. No continence problems, can communicate and have no problems with the mechanics of eating.. so a whole set of problems that i was just a tad concerned about adjusting to, actually don't exist. Which is fantastic. 2 of the guys can prepare their own food.. up to a point. the 3rd is far more dependent and needs a lot of prompting. Autism isn't the biggest issue.. its just one of many. two of the guys are bi-polar and have learning difficulties and are occasional self harmers. The one is very slobbery and emotionally 'needy' and the other exists on a knife edge.. with fairly frequent crises. (and given to very loud outbursts.) he was very reticent with me as a stranger.. while the other two were just fine. From the off. Another "Shadow shift" tomorrow and then I should be starting properly. Its all very laid back.. the Manager is a great guy.. easy going but very professional when needs must. No problem with the holiday I have arranged for September.. nor the other commitments I have. But there is a question to be answered fairly soon and thats about the shift pattern I want to work. The manager is in favour of a 3 day week.. so 2 x 14hr days and 1 x 9hr.. with 4 days to 'recover'. Thats been offered as an option.. but its largely up to me to decide how I want my week to pan out. Im not really sure about a 14hr day to be honest. Ive done 12hr days in the past and that was grim enough. Night shifts are generally being paid to sleep-over.. So.. we'll see. 3 months on probation at the end of which I should get a "Care certificate"

The GOAT Lives in Ambleside.. so perhaps will add some local knowledge. The last time I went to the Lakes was the day Diana was buried.. so.. I had the entire region to myself.. "Deserted" does not do justice to that day... it was like the 'London" scene at the start of 28 Days later.. without the litter and overturned cars. Actually.. one of my best days riding ever.. in this country. Glorious.

the rules are generally .. in a 40mph zone. over 46 and below 53 and no other offences in the previous 36 months. They will give you a fairly long lead time.. so you can arrange time off. It can only effect your insurance if the insurer asks you specifically "Have you attended a speed awareness course?" and you must tell them Yes. the more usual question about points and convictions.. the answer is No.

re waterproofing
Gerontious replied to fastbob's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
Sprays aren't waterproofing. All they do is form a surface layer that rainwater tends to bead on.. And drip away. Ideal for walking gear or tents. Bike clothing is something quite different, where the rain water is hitting you at much higher speeds and can force its way through due to pressure. You need a physical barrier, if water is getting through then that barrier has failed and needs to be repaired. Or covered over. If that's not possible then all you can do is replace. -
years ago, you could buy them made from something flint-like.. to create rather decorative trails of sparks.
-
Thats about right.. my GS had them on the original pegs, then I replaced them and the new (lower) ones didn't have them. They're not crucial in any way. just to prevent damage to the pegs if you lean a little too far.

Have you tried these people? https://www.brooksuspension.co.uk/honda-xr600-shock-absorber-rebuild-repair-service.html If your shock is irredeemable then you might consider buying a used one that is in better condition and having that rebuilt.

TRacker and alarm in one?
Gerontious replied to thevoyager's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
I would like to see an example of one of these devices. links? Theres a site you can use, its called Google I tried.. and failed. the consensus on google is that its scientifically impossible for the GPS signal from the satellites to penetrate metal.. even foil will stop it. The only way it can possibly work is if the signal is reflected from a nearby surface.. ie, the ground or by passing through non metallic surfaces. like glass. (car windows) Or brickwork.. roof tiles and windows. in my house. -

How does it? The vast majority of stolen vehicle run false plates rather than no plates. Either of the bikes could also have been recently stolen. The news story isn't about stolen vehicles, The police have said nothing about these bikes being stolen. this news story has only emerged after 7 weeks due to a video from a passing car.. and is only a story because its been linked to Moped street crime in London. Manchester action versus London inaction. And GMP make no comment whatsoever. which, to me is the strangest thing of all about this tabloid news story. Catching bike thieves and returning bikes to owners is.. and always has been a big deal because it so rarely happens. Catching Moped street criminals.. with stolen mobiles, watches and so on recovered. thats also a fairly big deal that coppers like to shout about. but.. there is nothing to suggest these bikes actually were stolen... or involved in street crime. Just that mopeds that had stopped at a junction were dramatically intercepted and detained. and thats the sum total of this story.. everything else is just unsubstantiated froth added by London based tabloid news editors and the original videos sharing/licensing site.
-
were the bikes stolen? were these people involved in moped crime.. or just daft riders? its unclear.. the fact that all three bikes had number plates kinda rules out that they were involved in street crime. I would be rather more impressed if the bikes were missing the number plates.. and I would be even more impressed if GMP actually mentioned this in their twitter account. so.. maybe not the huge deal the paper is making of it.. just a few idiot scooter riders on L plates riding like plonkers.

Buying a summer jacket
Gerontious replied to daveinlim's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
My summer jacket gets a lot of use.. throughout the year. including during the early winter.. though I'm likely to wear a sweater underneath and put the goretex liner in. Obviously with the weather we're having right now.. no liner and a fast wicking base layer and its just perfect. I have no objection to buying something to make life more comfortable in the heat... but I want to get a bit more use out of it than just a 5 day heatwave. Same goes for my summer gloves.. they also are worn fairly late into the autumn.. heated grips and handguards do extend the use of these things well past the usual cut-off date... My "summer" jackets and gloves are usually put away when the first frost arrives. Bought mine from FC Moto a couple of years ago.. I actually went into the shop!! (Quite an eye-opener) -
I would use half a can.. but its probably very volatile so the remainder will need to be stored in a glass jar and kept somewhere cool. well away from flame. add it to a low level tank and then fill up. you should then fill up again when the tank is half full.. so the action goes on for as long as possible. its likely not too different to the equivalent product from Wynns.. and a bottle of that is for a standard fuel tank in a car.. I use half. (rather a little too much than too little) it had zero effect on the petrol/engine/power characteristics. (because its so volatile)

Well-I-Never. Today I had the phone call..appear at the local head office on Monday July 2nd at 09:30 for a weeks "Induction training" Its taken quite a while to jump through all the various hoops. But, thats that.

Yes... but remove the armour first. if the gear is either waterproof or otherwise treated its CRUCIAL that there is no washing powder residue in the washing machine drawer. that is very important as it will ruin the gears ability to 'bead' water. if there is.. wash it clean. to wash your gear you will need to use NIKWAX TECHWASH. which you can buy online or any outdoor/camping place.. or go outdoors. and follow the instructions on the bottle and the care label on the gear. DO NOT use any kind of conditioner. hang it up to dry.. and let it dry naturally. (unless the care label says it can be tumbled) then replace the armour. It will likely drip for a while.. so either hang it outside or put some towels or similar underneath. and thats about it.

I would change the fuse.. go to a Halfords. Buy a bottle of Injector cleaner for Petrol engines.. add that to a full tank of SHELL fuelsave unleaded.. and see wha happens. its not just the highest grade shell that has cleaning additives.. they all do. including the base unleaded. (its called fuelsave.. because a clean fuel system means a more efficient engine) If this doesn't work.. then you will have to look at other options... but giving the fuel system a flush with 'cleaners' and cleaning petrol.. isn't expensive and just might work.. at worst the other parts of the fuel system will be cleaned out, fuel lines.. injectors. (or carbs) and combustion chamber.

HELMET ADVICE
Gerontious replied to Lanceautoman's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
This is one of those times where our former myth buster and authority on helmet safety, is sorely missed. -
Hope it goes well.
