  1. 3rd gear...... you meant 1st my ninja will do 70 odd in 1st gear alone so not sure what sports bikes your referring to Fair point ....I was trying to be eco friendly
  2. In short, yes, roads are busy but most visitors tend to get of the beaten track and go and explore the island, when racing is on, you can still get around, use some of the smaller B roads and explore some of the countryside.
  3. I actually spoke to a bloke a few months ago, retired here from London, hates the TT but bought a house right on the TT course! I mean come on, WTF, if you hate it so much, in all honesty, would you really do that!
  4. It beggars belief that this bill only includes motorcycles and not cars! IMHO that looks to me like it's absolutely nothing to do with noise....
  5. I agree, starting to see that on this Island now, I never ever thought that would happen on an island with a long history steeped in motorsport.
  6. Fair comments from Bob, however, I am a road racing fan, and I know, from increasing numbers of visitors, that I'm not the only one, I even go over to Ireland for the NW200. Yes it is dangerous and will always be that way, speak to any of the riders though and they love it....For them its a way of life, road racing culture that a lot of them have been brought up with, so its each to their own I suppose, braver men than me. I suppose some people think I'm crazy for chucking myself of mountains with a paraglider, but you have to do it understand the draw. I don't believe the islands accident statistics are anything to do with the push for such an OTT speed restriction, we actually have very few serious or fatal accidents outside of the TT, and even then, serious accidents among visiting fans has been on the decline for several years, its felt that this is mainly due to one way traffic on the mountain road, proactive policing and temporary speed restrictions on some of the more challenging roads around the island. What we are seeing is an increase in people retiring and moving to the island to live, it appears some of them dislike things such as the TT and FOM, I've seen a lot of groups and discussions on social media, with people lobbying politicians for things such as, speed limits, closing down green lanes to motorised vehicles, we even have a "ban the TT" brigade, although in fairness they've gone quiet. Some of these people have the ear of local politicians, they also know that the introduction of a 40mph speed limit will kill motorcycling as it currently is, "who's going to want to buy a sports bike when you can't get it out of 3rd gear". I have a couple of friends who come over from Germany, they've understandably said the same as Rich, they wouldn't bother coming. As for me, well I personally don't know how it would affect the island, I do know I'd sell the sports bike and just stick to green laning and off road riding, probably get an ADV bike for my trips away. I know a friend who works in a local Motorcycle dealers is worried, due to affect it could potentially have on business. Strange really, they make all manner of machines now to go faster, cars and motorbikes, then they do everything they can to reduce speed on roads
  7. I know a lot of people who come over to the Isle of Man for the TT, FOM and Southern 100 don't purely come just to watch racing. A lot of bikers, including a lot of my friends, come over for the craic, and to be able to enjoy some of the roads free of speed restrictions, such as the mountain road, it's a great draw for a lot of bikers who spend a small fortune getting and staying here. There has been a lot of talk recently about the introduction of an all island speed limit, 20mph in towns and villages and 40mph on all other roads. My question is purely out of interest, and just to gauge what bikers on this forum think, but, if these limits were introduced, would you still pay to attend the aforementioned motorcycle events the Island hosts each year.
  8. A bit old school this, something my dad used to do and I still do it, mix old engine oil with creosote (or creocote in B&Q), paint it on the garden fence, our garden fence is 16yrs old and not a bit of rot on it, seems to do the trick just nice, I used to also mix it with LM grease and paint the chassis of my old series 2 Landy with it as well .... A real messy job though
  9. A lot of it is common sense, don't rev the crap out of it, don't hold it at constant speeds for too long, don't allow the engine to labour. As snod said, check your warranty and look at what the owners manual recommends. On some bikes they can see if run in recommendations have been adhered to by simply plugging it into a computer.
  10. Great sport Simon, I did the BHPA training at Darley Moore, Airways airports, did the paraglider training with them as well. Don't do paramotor anymore, I used to fly a PAP with an ozone MOJO wing, I still throw myself of mountains with the paraglider though. I was supposed to be going to Verbier Summits later this year, not gonna happen now.
  11. Yes that corner has caught a few people out, me included, it can be pretty gusty at times. They've taken the gravel trap away as well, seen one or two people end up in that over the years, nice solid brick wall to stop you if it goes wrong now!
  12. You don't need a licence to fly RC aircraft. You're still obliged to comply with Civil Aviation Authority regulations and very large models need to be certified as airworthy. I used to fly in aerobatic competitions but the time and cost were beyond me in the end. I got a third place against the then world champion for the discipline I flew in. He got first, second and fourth. I only got third because just before my flight he gave me a tip on something to help me get a tail slide more accurate. It was a complaint that you didn't need a licence because there are too many idiots who can buy a ready made plans and try to fly it. An RC plane can be dangerous in the wrong hands. With lithium cells and brushless motors the power to weight ratio achievable these days is phenomenal. If you get a finger in a propeller powered by a glow motor (internal combustion) you lose a finger and the motor usually stalls. If you get a finger in an electric motor you lose a finger, then the motor restarts and you lose the rest of your fingers. Electric motors are far more dangerous. We had a club rule that you never flew alone, you always had someone else there in case you needed to be driven to hospital. Model aircraft follow the same laws of aerodynamics, so if you have the wing area you reduce the aerodynamic effect by four. Hence a perfect scale Spitfire that is small is virtually inflatable. For real scale you need bigger models, they are much easier to fly. I must admit, he made flying this spitfire look easy.....I know at Jurby where they fly here, they have to inform ATC that their flying in the area and let them know when their finished, the same as I have to when paragliding, I do remember him telling me to fly at Jurby he needed a club licence and had to pass some sort of test to get it? Probably something that is generic to the local club. I reckon, with the size of the aircraft he was flying, if it hit someone it would probably do them a lot of damage, or worse. It is a really popular sport though, I was watching someone on you tube with a remote control jet!! Amazing....
  13. You've done a cracking job of renovating that after 40yrs....I watched a bloke last year out at Jurby airfield flying a remote control spitfire, great admiration for him, he'd built it himself from scratch. This thing was Fooking massive! It was amazing watching him fly it, I didn't actually realise until then that you needed a licence to fly remote control aircraft.
  14. Really nice bike Mawsley One thing I've learnt over the years is "life's too short", enjoy it while you can mate, you'll have a massive smile on your face the day you pick it up and that's what its all about
  15. I have a ghost 4k and a GoPro 7, both pretty good cameras, you could mount either of them on a helmet, Ghost is a little bit more streamlined than a GoPro, you may struggle a bit with a flip up helmet though, I've not had any experience with these helmets, may limit where you can put it? You also have to bear in mind that a camera mounted on your helmet, potentially, can exacerbate any injury in an accident, Michael Schumacher is an example, however, I think a lot of that was probably speculation rather than fact, again, I'm not an expert in the kinetics of road accidents, a lot of info, both for and against helmet mounted cameras on the internet so I think it comes to to the individual to risk assess and make their own decision. I tend to mount mine onto the screen of the bike via a removable clip, almost like a big bulldog clip if you like. I don't have it on the bike all the time though, if I use it when greenlaning I tend to mount it on the side of my helmet, I can send you a photo if you want. I find both cameras give a good, stable, quality image, take some time to go through the settings on the camera and set it up right though. As Husoi stated, Police will take your camera in the event of an accident, if they pull you for any wrong doings they may also take the camera and use the video footage against you, a lot of people view the use of cameras, potentially, as a double edged sword. However, you'll already know that if you use a car dash cam.
  16. Hi and welcome, I've never owned one but have ridden a KTM390, I must admit I do like ADV bikes, this didn't disappoint, it was quicker than I expected, well made and relatively comfortable, I reckon that this would be a good all rounder, great for commuting but also a bike you could throw some luggage on for a weekend away, it seemed very forgiving and therefore would be an ideal first bike....As a bonus, if you ever wanted, you could do a few mods and hit the adventure trail.....I agree with Rennie though, what's suits one person won't suit another, get around the shops, sit on them and test ride them, you'll soon find one that suits you

    Newbie

Thats really sad mate and sorry for your loss.....welcome to the forum, post some photos of the bike, some really helpful and knowledgeable people here who'll help and give advice if they can
  18. Happy Anniversary mate....all the best....17yrs for me and the missus
  19. Not tensing up, especially in cross winds is really good advice, relax your arms and shoulders and release the "death grip" on the handle bars, grip with your knees, lean into the wind and practice counter steering. Relaxing in the saddle was something I learnt when I started off roading, accept the fact that the bike is going to move around and don't fight with the bike, because in the end it will win, just move with it. The good thing is, if you practice and can handle high winds on a 125 it'll be a breeze (no pun intended) on a bigger bike. It mostly comes down to experience and practice, have a look at this page, few good tips here, from what you say it sounds like you're picking it up now anyway .... All the best mate and safe riding https://motorbikewriter.com/ride-high-winds/
  20. Thanks for the reply mate, got a couple questions. - How long does the battery last running 4k 60fps? - would you reckon a 64gb microsd is enough for 4k60fps footage? Cheers Hi Mate, at 4k 60fps the battery doesn't last much longer than 40 odd minutes, 45 at a push, as for memory card size, 64gb at 4k won't hold that much, I used the 64gb originally when I bought the camera and wasn't impressed. However, it depends on what you want to record, I use a 128gb card (sandisk extreme) and that fits my needs perfectly but I believe the camera will also support 265gb, never looked at that though
  21. You can book the ferry but I don't think they know what flight schedules the Island will have yet....I know there were talks going on with Easy jet. If you get stuck for accommodation give me a shout, a woman I know lets out a cottage, I can ask her if she re-let it for 2021. If I hear anything on local news about the flight situation I'll give yo a holler Thanks Manxie .... i got accommodation sorted... looks like flights not available yet, next month should be ok though Up the Creg for a beer when you get over next year six
  22. Hi mate, and welcome. I agree with Rennie and WD-40, you should take a trip round a few motorcycle shops and have a sit on some different bikes. The shops I've been around are all pretty amenable and helpful. All advice is good but nothing will beat actually getting your leg over a machine and seeing how it fits....If you find one that seems comfortable with your knee problem the next step will be to arrange and extended test ride, take the bike for half a day for a reasonably good run, that's what I did with my MT, afterwards you'll know if its right for you. Safe riding mate and good luck
  23. Have a look at this Tiggie: https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2020/mar/26/can-i-get-a-cash-refund-instead-of-a-credit-note-coronavirus-travel-questions-answered We had a similar problem, however Easy Jet came through and we got a refund, our problem was with a UK holiday company. We booked a cottage and had only paid the deposit, the balance was due 8wks prior to departure, the holiday company refused to refund the deposit and told us that we were still liable for the balance, even though we were in lockdown! They said that it was in their terms and conditions (Very small, small print). I ended up taking legal advice and challenging their ruling. They eventually agreed to transfer our booking to next year which we were happy with. Look into it Tiggie, a lot of companies trying to take the proverbial, thinking they won't be challenged.
  24. just looked at re booking flights for next year but to early, none available at moment. You can book the ferry but I don't think they know what flight schedules the Island will have yet....I know there were talks going on with Easy jet. If you get stuck for accommodation give me a shout, a woman I know lets out a cottage, I can ask her if she re-let it for 2021.
