H’mmm Not sure the carbs would take kindly to that

So ... I’m stripping the carbs of the Trophy to give them a good clean and maybe some jetting work to suit a freer flowing inlet and exhaust. Why do we complain that the fixings are made of cheese when they churn up and slip .... only to complain that they are hard as iron when we try and slot them with a junior hacksaw??? Eventually used the Dremel to cut a slot and remove the bast*rd, only 6 more to go. Here is the recalcitrant bugger - the red stuff started dripping from my finger when the original screwdriver bit slipped !!

The final result looks very like the original polished version, a lot like my own experiment - how do you know it’s worked and you haven’t just buffed off the zinc coating? This isn’t a smart arse question, I’m truly interested.

Going by train on Sunday Only costs about £2:50 return from my place. Would go during the week when it’s a bit quieter but my mate can’t get the time off, also meeting up with an old mucker from work for a bevy and chinwag. Looking forward to it - also I usually treat myself to some kind of farkle as a prezzie from the Missus as my B’day is soon - if I want something pricey I just say it’s for Xmas as well !! Don’t know what ‘burned’ means, but the item I was trying to plate was structurally unaffected. The grey fur just wiped off. Just tested the transformer- 2.4 amps .. whoops !!

I found this: I wasn’t clever enough to understand that the rate of plating ( or amps ) was very important. Also I only gave the parts a polish and cleaned with panel wipe without and etching. I used an old slot car transformer that gives 14v ( although it says 12v) I need to check the amps. I created the mixture as described and switched on for about 5 mins This is what I got: The coating wiped off and didn’t seem to give a permanent finish. I tried giving 2 x 1minute busts, cleaning with a brass brush in between - seemed to stick better but can’t be sure it’s worked. I’m really interested in seeing your results.

Without pictures it never happened!! For all we know you’re buying time until you can get a new plate, having reduced the original to a pile of swarf and splinters !!

Right, So I torqued it up to 24Nm the same as the sump plug. Nothing snapped, sheared or stripped. The thick oil I used to lube the seal and hold it in place oozed out nicely as the seal compressed, so job done I reckon ( famous last words )

Oohh good call. I forgot I’ve got a bottle of that. Used it to get the glue residue off my Step daughters Clio when I was replacing the rear window / door seal. It kind of melted the old glue and it came off in sticky balls, a lot like snot but not as salty.

I spent hours this weekend tidying up the garage and chucking stuff out to make room! Even put down an old rug that the missus was chucking out to keep the bike cosy No shame here. Mine have greenhouse heaters and duvets keeping them cosy. I will admit to a small amount of shame over the duvets for 9T but the multicoloured psychedelic kitten duvet covers were a 1/4 of the cost of the next cheapest thing. For good reason it turns out- they’re awful. Kitten duvet?? Is that a duvet stuffed with kittens? What tog?

Thank you all for the advice. I am notoriously heavy handed, so try and use torque settings when I can, e.g. the engine cover bolts have a 9Nm spec, when I did them up it really didn’t feel enough and I’d have probably gone another 1/2 turn if left to my own devices. I have reduced flat pack furniture to near match wood through having all the finesse of a Rhino.

I used white spirit and a toothbrush. You can get 10 child’s toothbrushes for £2 at B&M so use them for cleaning stuff then chuck away. If they are soft enough for their teeth you won’t have to worry about scratching your wheel rims.
