1. The final result looks very like the original polished version, a lot like my own experiment - how do you know it’s worked and you haven’t just buffed off the zinc coating? This isn’t a smart arse question, I’m truly interested.
2. Going by train on Sunday Only costs about £2:50 return from my place. Would go during the week when it’s a bit quieter but my mate can’t get the time off, also meeting up with an old mucker from work for a bevy and chinwag. Looking forward to it - also I usually treat myself to some kind of farkle as a prezzie from the Missus as my B’day is soon - if I want something pricey I just say it’s for Xmas as well !! Mind you as it’s my money I suppose the only real gift is the one of silence when I unwrap it at home, and no “how f*cking much” !!
3. Answered one of the q’s
4. linuxrob I’ve got this: Do you reckon this will do the job? Also which wire is positive? The black or black with white stripe?
5. My Microwave is 29yrs old.. came from the Freemans Catalogue, a Christmas present in 1989. Ive no reason to chuck it. Did it come in a mahogany chest with a wrought iron lock?
6. Don’t know what ‘burned’ means, but the item I was trying to plate was structurally unaffected. The grey fur just wiped off. Just tested the transformer- 2.4 amps .. whoops !!
7. I found this: I wasn’t clever enough to understand that the rate of plating ( or amps ) was very important. Also I only gave the parts a polish and cleaned with panel wipe without and etching. I used an old slot car transformer that gives 14v ( although it says 12v) I need to check the amps. I created the mixture as described and switched on for about 5 mins This is what I got: The coating wiped off and didn’t seem to give a permanent finish. I tried giving 2 x 1minute busts, cleaning with a brass brush in between - seemed to stick better but can’t be sure it’s worked. I’m really interested in seeing your results.
8. Without pictures it never happened!! For all we know you’re buying time until you can get a new plate, having reduced the original to a pile of swarf and splinters !!
9. I’ll trump that with
10. Right, So I torqued it up to 24Nm the same as the sump plug. Nothing snapped, sheared or stripped. The thick oil I used to lube the seal and hold it in place oozed out nicely as the seal compressed, so job done I reckon ( famous last words )
11. Who the hell was the taste tester for this ???
12. I think that’s the point BD was making I realised once I posted... In my defence it's been a long day Long day my ar*e ... you wanna try sitting in a Speed awareness workshop for 4 hours ... now that is a LONG DAY !!
13. Has anyone ever paid full price for a DFS sofa? I think that’s the point BD was making
14. I have a long memory (snot not monkey sp*nk)
15. Oohh good call. I forgot I’ve got a bottle of that. Used it to get the glue residue off my Step daughters Clio when I was replacing the rear window / door seal. It kind of melted the old glue and it came off in sticky balls, a lot like snot but not as salty.
16. I spent hours this weekend tidying up the garage and chucking stuff out to make room! Even put down an old rug that the missus was chucking out to keep the bike cosy No shame here. Mine have greenhouse heaters and duvets keeping them cosy. I will admit to a small amount of shame over the duvets for 9T but the multicoloured psychedelic kitten duvet covers were a 1/4 of the cost of the next cheapest thing. For good reason it turns out- they’re awful. Kitten duvet?? Is that a duvet stuffed with kittens? What tog?
17. Stu Yeah I know, I get regular emails announcing price cuts but this is the cheapest I’ve seen in a while. No harm in spreading the love.
18. Looking to treat yourself to an early Xmas pressie or for Simone special? This is good kit with a good rep. Just got this in an email .. bargain
19. I'm just jealous you've both got garages. Posh bast*rds lording it over us scum Bloody right .. look at that ... his and hers pink scooters ... how the other half live hey??
20. Thank you all for the advice. I am notoriously heavy handed, so try and use torque settings when I can, e.g. the engine cover bolts have a 9Nm spec, when I did them up it really didn’t feel enough and I’d have probably gone another 1/2 turn if left to my own devices. I have reduced flat pack furniture to near match wood through having all the finesse of a Rhino.
21. I used white spirit and a toothbrush. You can get 10 child’s toothbrushes for £2 at B&M so use them for cleaning stuff then chuck away. If they are soft enough for their teeth you won’t have to worry about scratching your wheel rims.
22. It’s item 1 in the picture
23. Almost as good as Speed Triple
24. Can anyone point me in the direction of the correct torque value for the oil filter bolt on a 1994 Triumph Trophy 1200 ? It’s not in the Haynes manu, which seems a bit of a basic omission. Also in trying to find out, I’ve come across a post that says the 22mm oil drain plug should be tightened to 48Nm and that the 28Nm referred to in the Haynes manual is for the 14mm plug used on some models .... is this true or am I gonna end up with a stripped thread? Thanks.
25. From what I remember in the dim and distant olden days when I was an apprentice- In metal casting, it’s called the ‘lost wax’ process - complex shapes that cannot be removed from a mould are created in wax, when the molten metal is poured/injected in not the mould the wax burned off and dissipates.
